Torrington softballers undefeated at Cheyenne Tournament

CHEYENNE – The Torrington High School girls’ softball team commenced their inaugural spring season with a bang, winning both games it competed in at the Cheyenne Junior Varsity Tournament on March 19.

Originally scheduled for the previous weekend, snow in Cheyenne resulted in the rescheduling of the tournament to Tuesday.

Torrington made a statement right out of the gates, defeating Cheyenne Central’s junior varsity squad, 12-5, in the first game.

The Lady Blazers squared off against the Cheyenne South junior varsity team in the second game, pulling out the win in a close game by a 6-4 margin.

Head coach Robin Schainost expressed pride in the team’s first performances for the season.

“We had kids really step up and hit the ball hard and put bunts down when needed,” Schainost said. “There is always room for improvement and things to work on over the coming weeks, but the girls played well as a team and supported each other. Torrington came out strong for its first games and hit the ball and fielded well.”

Following some initial, and understandable, jitters against Cheyenne Central in the opening game, Torrington quickly found its groove and “started making great contact and running the bases” Schainost noted.

“The fielders did good things as well,” Schainost added.

Torrington High School freshman Zaela Rios kicked the first game off on a run with a “big double hitter,” Schainost said.

Both Lingle-Fort Laramie sophomore Laney Grubbs and Torrington freshman Jadyn Chilson “put down great bunts” over the course of the day, Schainost continued.

Lingle-Fort Laramie sophomore Skyla Wunder consistently “hit the ball well” during both games and Torrington sophomore Kennedy Reinhardt stepped up to the mound and “pitched really well,” Schainost said.

“Everybody got to play at Cheyenne with each athlete getting in at least a couple of innings,” Schainost remarked.
