THS tracksters set new PRs and school records at Wheatland

WHEATLAND – A successful day for the Torrington High School track team at the Wheatland Invitational on March 28 culminated with athletes snagging hardware and achieving new records.

The girls’ 4x100-meter relay team clinched first place, setting a new Torrington High School outdoor track record in the process. Sophomore Brooklyn Asmus, junior Jaycee Hurley, senior Alyssa Wondercheck and sophomore Natalie Hawes crossed the finish line with a state qualifying time of 49.35 seconds. The team beat the runner-up Douglas by more than two seconds.

Asmus dominated girls’ sprinting events, winning the 100-meters with a time of 12.46 seconds. The sophomore finished the race ahead of Wheatland’s Desirae Iacovetto by a margin of 0.36 seconds.

Clocking the 200-meter finals in at 25.52 seconds, Asmus garnered gold in the event, beating Iacovetto by nearly one second.

Senior Tyler Bennick continued to make a statement in boys’ throwing. Bennick captured first place in the shot put, hitting a mark of 53 feet, four inches. The senior’s winning throw landed one foot, four inches farther than the second-place finisher, Tegen Seeds of Douglas.

Bennick also obtained gold in the discus with a throw of 140-01, beating Seeds by nearly three feet.

In the girls’ triple jump, sophomore Trishell Pontarolo earned first place with a leap of 36-07. The sophomore’s winning jump landed more than three feet ahead of the second-place finisher, Laramie’s Kamrie Bingham.

The girls’ 4x800-meter relay team – junior Tiffany Krueger, sophomore Natalie Long, sophomore Callie Taylor and freshman Ava Mattis – took first place at 11 minutes, 42.11 seconds.

Wondercheck hit a prequalifying mark for state in the girls’ long jump, securing third place at 17-02. Pontarolo punched her ticket to state in the long jump as well, placing fourth at 16-07 ¾.

“We had a great outing at Wheatland by both the boys’ and girls’ teams,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “Athletes posted great marks and we saw several PRs in jumps and throwing. We are getting ready to come off spring break and go to Cheyenne East on Friday.”

In sprinting events, Wondercheck pulled into third place in the 100-meter finals crossing the finish line in 13.16 seconds. Hurley picked up fifth place in the event at 13.41 seconds.

Hawes scooped up second place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.79 seconds and went on to garner silver in the 300-meter hurdles,  at 49.44 seconds.

Hurley came in fifth place in the 300-meter hurdles, clocking in at 50.90 seconds. Freshman Kadence Schamel earned seventh place in the 100-meter hurdles at 18.88 seconds.

Representing Torrington in the 3200-meters, Taylor achieved fifth place in the event at 13:32.75.

Junior Teryn Stokes captured second place in the shot put, hitting a mark of 32-05. 

Freshman Kaia Jacobson finished seventh in the shot put with a toss of 29-00 ½. 

Junior Wittni Bugher secured sixth place in the discus, clearing 80-04, while freshman Katie Reimer placed eighth at 77-07.

Long tied for sixth place in the pole vault, measuring 7-06.

Relay highlihgts included a second-place finish for Hawes, Long, Pontarolo and Wondercheck in the 4x400-meters at 4:18.27.

Boys top eight

Clocking the 1600-meter run in at 5:08.10, senior Zabdiel Munoz snagged fifth place in the event.

In hurdles, freshman Beau Martinez placed sixth in the 300-meters, with a time of 47.91 seconds, and eighth in the 110-meters, at 19.68 seconds.

Junior Evan Hellus picked up third place in the triple jump, measuring 39-08, and went on to place seventh in the long jump, at 18-09.

In throwing events, senior Trey Parriott garnered third place in the shot put, hitting a mark of 48-02. The senior also secured fifth place in the discus at 123-02.

Fellow senior Brayden Frazier clinched sixth place in the shot put, clearing 43-07. Junior Brayden Hime picked up seventh place in the discus, posting a toss of 111-11. 

Senior Jorey Asmus, sophomore Brady Dagen, junior Tyler Nicolay and Munoz took second place in the 4x800-meter relay at 9:49.47.

• 800-meters: Krueger in 11th place at 2:55.73 and Esperanza Chavez in 17th at 3:08.18.

• Pole vault: Chavez and Wilson tied for 12th place at 7-00.

• Long jump: Schamel in 21st place at 13-04 ½.

• Triple jump: Mattis in 11th place at 28-09 ½.

• Shot put: Reimer in 15th place at 26-06, Karlee Mathson in 23rd at 23-10 and Bugher in 29th at 22-03.

• Discus: Mathson in ninth place at 77-04, Stokes in 13th at 74-05 and Jacobson in 23rd at 61-04.

• 200-meters: Hellus in 13th place at 25.49 seconds, Lira in 30th at 26.32, Nobs in 32nd at 26.38 and Heron in 41st at 26.96.

• 400-meters: Asmus in ninth place at 1:01.02 and Dagen in 11th at 1:02.06.

• Pole vault: Nicolay tied for 11th place at 8-06.

• Long jump: Martinez in 21st place at 17-05 and Lira in 28th at 16-06.
