HAWK SPRINGS – Pete Carlson, 78, of Hawk Springs passed away on October 18, 2024. Born on February 4, 1946, in Greeley, he was the son of Elmer and Anna May Carlson.
Pete moved to Fort Morgan at a young age and graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1964. He married Stella Sullivan, with whom he had three children: Christie, Eric, and Michael.
Pete worked alongside his father on the family farm and later owned his own business. Following his divorce, he met Bernice Goetschel, and they spent several years in California before marrying in 1988 and relocating to Hawk Springs, where they enjoyed 36 wonderful years together.
Known affectionately as “Backhoe Pete,” he spent his career as an equipment operator. Pete had a passion for hunting, fishing, and camping, and he loved sharing jokes and stories, especially while cooking for family and friends. He cherished his time with Bernice, his children, and his grandchildren.
Pete is survived by his beloved wife Bernice, his three children—Christie of Ramona, California, Eric of Fort Morgan, and Michael (Shelly) of Fort Morgan; his sister Joyce (Tony), brothers Chuck (Alice) and Arne (Carri); and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews
A memorial gathering to honor Pete will be held on October 26, 2024, at 1 p.m. at the Community Building in Hawk Springs. His warmth and humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
