Leon was born March 25, 1953, in Kearney, Nebraska to Duane and Leona (Drage) Swartwood, the youngest of three boys. After years in Odessa, they moved to the panhandle where he graduated from Scottsbluff High School, class of 1971. That being the same location where he would meet his one and only, Joy and they would later tie the knot on May 9, 1974.
Making moves for his career the two moved to North Platte, Nebraska and then later moved to Cheyenne where they resided for seventeen years, before moving to Torrington in May of 1992, where he has lived ever since.
Leon enjoyed spending time with his family and never turned down a fishing or hunting trip. He spent many years on the water or in the mountains with family taking in the sights and coming home with a limit, which always had a small one because “you can’t throw your first one back!”
After 42 years of his life working for Union Pacific Railroad he retired in 2013 and spent the rest of his years following his grandchildren to their various sporting events and graduations.
Leon is survived by his three kids Jarrod Swartwood of Lingle. Jimmy Swartwood of Torrington and Jamie (Scott) Simons of Gillette. Also, his grandchildren Dustin Swartwood, Taylor Swartwood, Destiny Swartwood, Rylie Simons and Grayson Simons. And his two brothers Larry (Renee`) Swartwood and Lonnie (Eileen) Swartwood. Leon is preceded in death by his wife Joy, his parents and many aunts and uncles.
