SUMMERTOWN, TENNESSEE – James Thomas Haynes Sr. (Jim) passed away quietly at his home in Summertown, Tennessee on December 17, 2024, where he lived with his beloved wife Jeanne.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Nettie Sue and Mary Jane, his first wife Phyllis, his son Kevin, his daughter-in-law Jackie, his granddaughter Ashley, and 2 step-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Jeanne, sister Patsy, brother David, sons: James Jr. (Milica)-Mesa, Arizona; Michael-Winter Garden, Florida; Jason (Carmen)-Mesa; Mark (Karen)-Centerville, Tennessee; stepchildren Nissa (David) Meyer-Mesa; David (Shelly) Fuller-Mesa; Jenna (Zak) Warner-Summertown, Tennessee; 13 grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren, and14 great-grandchildren.

Jim was born 20 April 1937 in Los Angeles, California, where he lived with his parents and siblings until his mother’s passing when he was 14. Due to hardships, he experienced after his mother passing, he joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17; he persuaded his grandmother into letting him sign up.

While in the Navy, he met his first wife Phyllis Shumway, in California. They were married on April19,1957. Their first son, Jim Jr., was born in 1958. After his service, they moved to Lovell, Wyoming, Phyllis’ hometown. Their second son Michael was born in Lovell. The family relocated to Salt Lake City where Jim completed Barber School. The family moved first to Lingle for Jim’s first job and then to Torrington. Jim barbered in Torrington for the next 40 years and his family increased with three more sons: Kevin, Jason and Mark. All five sons graduated from Torrington High School. Jim became a stable part of the community on Main Street.

After his first wife Phyllis passed away in 1988, and after retirement, Jim spent time traveling to visit his sons scattered from California to Arizona to Florida. While visiting Arizona, Jim’s daughter-in-law, Jackie, introduced him to Jeanne Fuller, his current wife. They hit it off from the start and were happily married for the next 25 years.

A Celebration of Life will be held April 18, 2025, in Mesa, Arizona.
