GILLETTE – The Torrington High School (THS) indoor track team topped off a successful season with a strong showing at the 2024 3A State Indoor Track Championships in Gillette on March 1-2.

The THS girls’ team garnered second place overall in a field of 16 schools with 74 team points. The boys placed 11th with 17 points.

“I thought all the kids, boys and girls, competed well,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “I’m really rpoud of our state placers and it was great for the girls to take home that second-place trophy.”

The girls’ achievement was all the more impressive considering the relatively small size of the THS varsity team.

“We had seven girls bring something to the podium,” said sophomore Trishell Pontarolo. “We worked really hard and it showed. It was cool to see Torrington come out in the top two.”

Fellow sophomore Brooklyn Asmus agreed.

“Placing second as a girls’ team felt great with the numbers we had, because only so many advanced to the finals and it takes a lot to score points,” Asmus explained. “It was really cool to place so high, being one of the smaller schools.”

Pontarolo, Asmus, sophomore Natalie Hawes and senior Alyssa Wondercheck captured gold in the girls’ 4x200-meter relay, setting a new personal and school record of 1 minute, 46.60 seconds.

Senior Harper Boche snagged the state championship in the girls’ shot put, hitting a mark of 38 feet, 2 inches.

In sprinting events, Asmus took second place in the girls’ 55-meter dash finals, clocking in at 7.33 seconds. Asmus went on to secure second place in the 200-meter finals, posting a time of 25.74 seconds.

Wondercheck scooped up third place in the girls’ long jump with a leap measuring 17-00 ½. The senior also garnered fifth place in the 55-meter dash finals at 7.55 seconds.

Pontarolo made the top 10 in both the girls’ triple jump, with a third-place finish at 34-09, and the long jump, placing seventh at 15-08 ¼.

Hawes clinched fourth place in the finals for girls’ 55-meter hurdles, timing the event in at 9.10 seconds.

Junior Angie Logsdon placed sixth in the girls’ pole vault with a mark of 9 feet.

Additional relay highlights for the girls’ team included a second place finish by Asmus, Hawes, Pontarolo and Wondercheck in the 4x400-meters. The team crossed the finish line in 4:18.12.

In the boys’ shot put, the senior trio of Tyler Bennick, Trey Parriott and Brayden Frazier all broke into the top 10. Bennick led with a second-place finish at 54-06 ¾.

Parriott came in fourth place at 49-06 with Frazier placing eighth at 45-04 ½.

Senior Zabdiel Munoz, sophomore Travis Nobs, Nathan Lira and Landon Fuller secured sixth place in the boys’ 1600-sprint medley relay at 4:00.06.
