TORRINGTON – A judge set a $5,000 cash-or-surety bond Monday for a former office manager charged with eight felony counts of forgery in a case involving an alleged loss of approximately $688,477 from two Goshen County businesses.

Incumbent Torrington Mayor Herb Doby, seeking a second term in the Aug. 18 primary, answered the Telegram's full candidate questionnaire. Fellow candidate Bob Peterson declined to comment for this story. The third candidate, James Allen, could not be reached despite the Telegram's attempts to contact him.

Four Republican candidates are seeking two of the three seats on the Goshen County Board of Commissioners ahead of the Aug. 18 primary, each carrying a four-year term: incumbent Aaron Walsh, Brent Anderson, Roger Huckfeldt and Josh MacKenzie.

A false rumor that the Lingle Volunteer Fire Department had closed its doors is driving up home insurance premiums for some town residents, while a positive bacteria test in two of the town's wells this week put water quality briefly in question, town officials told the Lingle Town Council at its Aug. 5 meeting.

The Torrington City Council traded its usual meeting room for picnic tables Tuesday evening, recessing a short business session so members could take part in National Night Out alongside police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, sheriff's deputies and dozens of residents at Jirdon Park.
