WHEATLAND – Wheatland Police Department (WPD) and Platte County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) were investigating a reported violent incident on Sunday morning according to social media posts made and shared by both departments and a later press release.

At 4:44 a.m. on Sunday morning, WPD informed residents there was an active investigation on South Street.

“South St. is closed from 16th St. to 13th St. and all intersecting streets…There is no danger to the public,” WPD wrote in its Facebook page, adding, “Please stay away from the area until further notice.”

By 11 a.m., PCSO shared WPD’s Facebook announcement and added: “Please be aware and allow them to conduct their investigation,” the sheriff’s department wrote.

“Our office (PCSO) has been working in collaboration with the Wheatland, Wyoming Police Department since late last night,” PCSO wrote. “WPD will post further details as they can…There is no active threat to the community at this time,” PCSO Sheriff David Russell wrote.

On Sunday evening at 6 p.m., WPD updated the community via another Facebook post.

“Good evening Wheatland community, we want to thank everyone for your patience as this ongoing investigation continues,” WPD wrote. “We know it was an inconvenience to have street closures and we appreciate that everyone stayed clear of the area. The streets are open and can be traveled on.”

The social media post goes on to say, “We also want to take this time to thank the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation and the Platte County Sheriff’s Office for assisting us on this incident.”

The department then informed residents a press release will be coming in the near future.

Just after 9 a.m. on Monday, WPD issued a press release confirming the incident from over the weekend. “On June 15, 2025, at approximately 11:48 p.m., officers of the Wheatland Police Department and the Platte County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of South Street and 13th Street for a report of an individual causing a noise disturbance,” Chief Otte wrote. “During our investigation, officers were led to the former Big A complex.”

Otte added, “Officers saw that a door to the building had been broken and they found an injured individual inside the building.”

According to the police statement, the individual was transported to Platte County Memorial Hospital and later transported to another medical facility.

“The individual causing the noise disturbance was also transported to the Platte County Memorial Hospital,” Otte explained in the press statement. “The individual was treated and released from the hospital and placed into custody by the Wheatland Police Department and charged with burglary.”

Additionally, the department made a statement regarding an earlier statement released by a radio station regarding the situation over the weekend.

“This information was obtained without first confirming it through the Wheatland Police Department,” Otte stated in the release. “The information contained in KYCN’s press release was less than factual and seemed to be based on rumor.”

The Platte Co. Record-Times left a voicemail for the radio station on Monday to offer an opportunity to make a statement regarding the press release from the police department. There was no response by press time.

Chief Otte thanked his department, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation and the Platte County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance in the investigation and scene processing.

“This incident is still an ongoing investigation and no further information will be released at this time,” Otte said.
