Lady Cyclones compete in Winter Classic

BURNS – The Southeast Lady Cyclones started out their season 2-1 at the Burns Winter Classic, beating Shoshoni and Saratoga, while falling to second-ranked Wyoming Indian.

“I saw some good things, but I also saw a lot of things we need to work on as a team,” coach Jennifer Scheer said. “The season is young. These opening weekends are hard. We haven’t even had two full weeks of practice. It was nice to play a few games, but right now it’s just about getting all the kids on the same page.”

The Lady Cyclones started their season with a tough matchup against the Lady Chiefs, falling 47-31.

“I thought we started slowly on Friday morning. I wasn’t happy with our defense, but by the end of the weekend, we picked it up,” Scheer said. “We were not prepared to play a team at that level. More than anything, it’s a learning experience.”

Following the opening loss, Southeast ratcheted down on the defensive end of the floor, beating Saratoga 37-16.

In the final game of the weekend, the Lady Cyclones found themselves in a back-and-forth battle with the Lady Blue. At the end of the first frame, both teams were tied at 12 and they were tied at 20 heading into intermission. Coming back to the floor, Shoshoni crept out to a 24-23 lead over the Lady Cyclones, before Southeast went on a roll to win 36-30.

The Lady Cyclones return to the floor this weekend to compete in the Shoshoni Invitational. Southeast plays Rocky Mountain, Little Snake River and Farson-Eden.

“We have to improve in every area on the basketball floor,” Scheer said. “Right now, we are just looking to improve. To be able to compete with them, we have to match their intensity and be fundamentally sound.”
