WYOMING – The U.S. Postal Service is encouraging customers to support breast cancer research during October by purchasing special fundraising stamps available year-round.
The Breast Cancer Research stamp costs 90 cents and is sold in sheets of 20 at post offices nationwide, online at usps.com, through the USA Philatelic catalog or by calling 800-STAMP-24.
“These 90-cent self-adhesive semi postal stamps are available year-round in sheets of 20 to help raise funds for breast cancer research,” according to a USPS announcement.
The postal service contributes the difference between the 90-cent purchase price and the current First-Class Mail rate to breast cancer research, minus USPS costs. Federal law directs 70% of contributions to the National Institutes of Health and 30% to the Department of Defense medical research program.
The stamp has generated approximately $98 million since its 1998 release, making it the first semi postal stamp in U.S. history. Congress authorized the stamp in 1997 specifically to raise funds for finding a breast cancer cure.
The Stamp Out Breast Cancer Reauthorization Act of 2019 extended the stamp’s sale authority through 2027.
The Postal Service offers three additional fundraising stamps: the Save Vanishing Species semi postal stamp from 2011, the Alzheimer’s semi postal stamp from 2017 and the Healing PTSD semi postal stamp from 2019. All four stamps support causes in the national public interest.
Customers can purchase stamps at Post Office locations, through the Postal Store at usps.com/shopstamps, by calling 844-737-7826 or by mail through USA Philatelic.
