TORRINGTON – A blowout victory by the Torrington Tigers ‘C’ Legion baseball team in both games of a double-header against the Saratoga Cutthroats made the long road trip for Torrington more than worth it on Sunday, June 1.

The Tigers cruised past Saratoga in the first game, 15-0, before crushing the Cutthroats in the second game, 21-0.

“I thought for our first time on the road this season, the boys really handled getting off the bus and getting ready to play,” coach Rob Mortimore said. “Offensively, we did just about anything we wanted and took some solid at-bats in both games. Our pitching and defense was the highlight of the trip. Any time you give up only one hit, you’re going to give yourselves a chance to win. Our pitching completed in the strike zone all day and our defense was very good behind them.”

Game 1

The Tigers opened with four runs in the top of the first inning while solid fielding by Torrington in the bottom kept Saratoga from scoring.

Torrington tallied two runs in the top of the second inning and three in the fourth. A 6-0 run by the Tigers in the fifth inning clinched the win for Torrington.

The Tigers collected eighth hits against Saratoga in the first game, led by Barrett Bruch with two hits for three RBI. Brody Shields recorded one hit for three RBI. James Stienmetz, Owen Curry, Ebin Hunter and Patrick Mortimore each contributed one hit for two RBI apiece.

Stienmetz stepped up to the mound and pitched the first three innings, striking out six. Asher Mattis played relief for two innings, striking out three.

Game 2

The Tigers lay the groundwork for victory with nine runs in the top of the first inning. Torrington sealed the win with one run in the top of the second and 11 in the third.

The Tigers tallied nine hits in the second game versus the Cutthroats. Mortimore paced the Torrington offense with two hits for three RBI. Curry collected two hits for two RBI. Mattis, Stienmetz, Easton Desmond, Shields and Marek Nunnes each recorded one run.

Nunnes pitched the first two innings for the Tigers, striking out three. Chase Moeller came in as relief for one inning, promptly striking out three in the bottom of the third inning to leave Saratoga scoreless in the second game.
