TORRINGTON – The Torrington Tigers ‘C’ Legion baseball team rallied from a setback in the first game of a double-header against Laramie on Tuesday, June 24, to soundly defeat their opponent in the second game.
The Tigers battled to close an early 6-1 lead by Laramie to a two-run advantage by the sixth inning of the first game. The Tigers came up short in finding offensive traction in the seventh inning and fell to Laramie, 6-4.
Digging deep, the Tigers returned to the field for the second game to score a blowout victory against Laramie, 13-0.
“We had several opportunities in game one to break it open early, as well as late,” coach Rob Mortimore said. “Credit to Laramie for executing and getting out of innings where we had traffic. The boys responded very well in game two and we were able to capitalize when we had opportunities. I was very pleased with how the boys bounced back to earn a split.”
Game 1
A strong Tigers defense shut out Laramie in the top of the first inning. Laramie sent a fly ball to Marek Nunnes in left field before grounding out to Ebin Hunter at third base and Barrett Bruch at shortstop.
Torrington got on the scoreboard with one run in the top of the first when a single by Hunter sent Asher Mattis home.
Following scoreless second and third innings, Laramie took control of the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the fourth inning and four in the fifth.
Torrington blasted back in the bottom of the second. James Stienmetz smashed a tater into left field for two RBI to narrow Laramie’s lead to three runs, 6-3.
The Tigers fielders prevented Laramie from scoring in the top of the sixth inning. Laramie hit a pop fly to Bruch on the mound. A double play ensued with Hunter fielding a grounder at third base and sending the ball to Chase Moeller on first.
A double by Easton Desmond for one RBI in the bottom of the sixth reduced Laramie’s advantage to two runs, 6-4.
Torrington collected six hits against Laramie in the first game. Stienmetz paced the Tigers offense with two hits and two RBI, including a home run. Desmond also tallied two hits with Hunter and Patrick Mortimore contributing one apiece.
Owen Curry pitched the first four innings for the Tigers, striking out three. Bruch came in as relief, striking out three.
Game 2
Torrington’s fielders opened the second game with three quick outs in the top of the first inning. Nunnes struck out one from the mound. Mattis fielded a fly ball at center field before Laramie grounded out to Curry at shortstop.
The Tigers pulled ahead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Mattis reached home on a passed ball. Moeller drew a walk, sending Bruch home. Nunnes hit a grounder and reached first on an error, allowing Stienmetz to score.
The Tigers outscored Laramie in the second inning, 2-0. Bruch doubled for one RBI while a single by Curry sent one home.
A 7-0 run by the Tigers in the third inning placed Torrington up, 12-0. Mortimore set the pace for the Tigers offense in the bottom of the third with a double for three RBI. Bruch also hit a double for one RBI. Hunter singled, sending one home. Desmond hit a grounder and reached first on an error for Mortimore to reach home. Desmond then scored on a passed ball.
Bruch hit his third double in the bottom of the fourth for an additional run.
The Tigers topped off their win by shutting out Laramie in the top of the fifth.Nunnes struck out two before Laramie grounded out to Curry at shortstop.
Torrington tallied eight hits in the second game. Bruch led the Tigers offense with three hits and three RBI. Mortimore collected one hit and three RBI. Mattis, Curry, Hunter and Moeller each contributed one hit.
Nunnes pitched all five innings for the Tigers, striking out six.
