TORRINGTON – The Torrington Tigers ‘C’ Legion baseball team maintained its winning streak with back-to-back victories against the Cheyenne Post No. 6 Indians at home on Tuesday, May 27.

The Tigers overwhelmed Cheyenne in the first game of Tuesday’s double-header, 13-1.

In the second game, A 7-0 run by Torrington in the second inning lay the foundation for a 12-3 win for the Tigers.

“The boys came out and set the tone in the bottom of the first inning of game one, and minus a few mental lapses throughout the night, never took their foot off the gas,” coach Rob Mortimore said. “It’s nice to pick up a pair of conference wins to open the season and protect our home field.”

Both the Tigers’ offense and defense gelled throughout most of the double-header.

“From top to bottom, our offense made a lot of things happen and we had success putting the ball in play,” Mortimore added. “Defensively is where we had a couple lapses, but we were able to overcome those with minimal damage and executed very well.”

Game 1

The Tigers set the momentum in the first inning. Torrington’s fielders shut out the Indians in the top of the first. Pitcher James Stienmetz fielded a grounder and tossed the ball to Chase Moeller at first base. Marek Nunnes fielded a pop fly in left field and Stienmetz struck out a batter.

The Tigers posted eight runs in the bottom of the first. Stienmetz doubled for one RBI. Owen Curry hit a grounder, driving in one.

Torrington outscored Cheyenne in the third inning, 2-1. Stienmetz doubled for one RBI in the bottom of the inning and then scored on a wild pitch.

The Tigers’ fielders prevented Cheyenne from reaching home in both the fourth and fifth innings.

In the top of the fourth, the Indians grounded out to Shields at shortstop and Shields tossed the ball to Curry at second base. Stienmetz struck out two batters from the pitcher’s mound.

In the bottom of the fourth, Torrington tallied two more runs. Asher Mattis scored on a passed ball while Bruch stole home.

The top of the fifth inning saw the Tigers promptly tally three outs. Cheyenne grounded to Hunter on third base and Hunter sent the ball to Moeller on first. The combo of Shields at shortstop and Moeller at first collected the second out on a grounder. Bruch, Torrington’s catcher, caught the third runner attempting to steal home.

The Tigers totaled nine hits against Cheyenne, led by Bruch with three. Stienmetz recorded two hits with one apiece by Curry, Hunter, Shields and Patrick Mortimore.
