CHEYENNE – Conference play and temperatures heated up as the Torrington Tigers ‘A’ Legion baseball team battled the Gillette Rustlers and Sheridan Jets in two home double-headers the previous week.

On Thursday, June 26, the Tigers clinched two victories against Gillette. Torrington trounced the Rustlers in the first game, 15-5, before scoring a 15-0 blowout win in the second.

“The Gillette double-header went really well for us,” coach Lane Greiman said. “The pitching staff competed on the mound, holding Gillette to very few runs and allowing our sticks to get going pushing runs across for two good wins.”

The Tigers returned to Bullock Field on Saturday for a double-header versus Sheridan lasting more than six hours. Torrington battled the Jets to a 9-9 tie by the bottom of the eighth inning. The Tigers shut out Sheridan in the top of the ninth inning and scored a single decisive run to clinch the victory, 10-9.

Torrington came up short to Sheridan in the second game, 12-6.

“Game one against Sheridan was a good one,” Greiman added. “Both teams competed to the very end and fortunately for us, we ended getting to push one more run across to seal the win for us in a back-and-forth game. In game two, the boys came out after a long game one and gave us everything they could. Sheridan had a good pitcher that kept our sticks off balance and ultimately kept us from the win.”
