TORRINGTON – The Torrington Tigers ‘A’ Legion baseball team split an away double-header against the Pelz Company Spartans in Alliance on Saturday, May 3.
The Tigers hit the ground running in the first game to tally a 13-5 victory. Alliance rebounded in the second game for a 10-5 win.
Game 1
Alliance struck first with four runs in the top of the first inning while shutting out Torrington in the bottom.
The fielders on both teams stepped up in scoreless second and third innings.
The Tigers fired back in the top of the fourth inning with six runs. James Stienmetz singled for two RBI. Colby Sandusky followed up with a single, driving in one, while Drew Kramer tripled for two RBI. Ayden Desmond rounded out scoring with a hit for one RBI.
Torrington clinched its win with seven more runs in the top of the fifth inning while a tenacious Tigers defense prevented Alliance from scoring in the bottom.
In the top of the fifth, Mac Hibben collected the first run on a passed ball. Stienmetz and Kramer both singled for one RBI each. Desmond drew a walk, driving in one. Hibben closed with a triple for three RBI.
In the bottom of the fifth, Desmond struck out two Alliance hitters as pitcher while Kramer fielded a pop fly at shortstop.
Torrington totaled 10 hits in the first game, with Kramer setting the pace for the Tigers at three hits for three RBI. Hibben and Stienmetz both recorded two hits for three RBI apiece. Desmond, Sandusky and Ty Albaugh each tallied one hit.
On the pitcher’s mound, Grady Shields opened for Torrington, striking out two over 2.2 innings. Desmond came in as relief, striking out four.
Game 2
Alliance took control of the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the first inning and five in the second while shutting out Torrington in the bottom of both innings.
The Tigers collected seven hits against Alliance in the second game with two each by Kramer and Hibben and one apiece from Desmond, Ryan Moorehouse and Caleb Kelly.
Moorehouse pitched the first inning for the Tigers, striking out two. Hibben played relief for four innings, striking out nine.
