LARAMIE – An action-packed week consisting of six games over five days resulted in four victories for the Torrington Tigers ‘A’ Legion baseball team.
The wins catapulted the Tigers to the No. 1 spot in the ‘A’ East division in Wyoming with Torrington sporting an undefeated 4-0 conference record and a 15-8 overall record.
The Tigers hit the ground running with a double-header victory against the Douglas Cats at home on Wednesday, June 11. A neck-and-neck first game ended with Torrington ahead by one run, 3-2. The Tigers trounced Douglas, 7-3, in the second game.
“The Douglas games were really competitive and the boys played great against a well-coached team,” coach Lane Greiman said. “We couldn’t wait out the rain to finish the second game but ended up getting two wins against a very tough opponent.”
On Sunday, June 15, Torrington boarded the bus for a double bill against the Laramie Rangers A team. Both games came down to the wire with the Tigers posting a 9-8 win in the first game and defeating Laramie, 6-5, in the second.
“Laramie was another well-coached and fundamentally sound team,” coach Greiman said. “We competed to the very end in both games (against the Rangers). We played a little stagnant and flat. However, the boys never gave up and snuck two more tough wins against good competition.”
Torrington competed in the Dooley Oil Classic tournament in Laramie on Saturday, June 13. The Tigers fell to a team from Billings, Montana, 6-5, in the first game before coming up short against the Rock Springs 307 Spartans, 9-3, in the second game.
Douglas – Game 1
The Cats established a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning.
The Tigers’ fielders stepped up to shut out Douglas for the remainder of the game. In the top of the third inning, the Cats lined out to Colby Sandusky in left field. Drew Kramer fielded a fly ball at second base and tossed the ball to Caleb Kelly at first base to complete the double play.
Another double play by the Torrington defense prevented Douglas from finding traction offensively in the top of the fourth inning. The Cats hit a grounder to Landre Greiman at shortstop. Greimen sent the ball to Kelly at first for the second out. Grady Shields also struck out one as pitcher for the Tigers.
The top of the fifth inning featured a third double-play by Torrington. Mac Hibben fielded a line ball at center field before delivering the ball to Kelly at first. Shields struck out the third runner from the mound.
Following a scoreless sixth inning, it all came down to the seventh inning.
Torrington’s fielders stepped up to prevent the Cats from reaching home in the top of the seventh. Shields struck out the first batter for Douglas. The Cats lined out to Hibben at center field before Greiman caught a fly ball at shortstop.
The Tigers stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning to score three crucial runs and win the game.
Ty Albaugh opened with a double, sending Hibben and Asher Mattis home. Sandusky slammed a double into the field for Albaugh to score.
Shields pitched the first 6.2 innings for Torrington, striking out eight. Sandusky played relief.
Douglas – Game 2
The Tigers won the first inning, 3-2. In the bottom of the first, Shields opened with a sacrifice grounder to send Kramer home. Hibben singled for one RBI before scoring on a wild pitch.
Torrington widened its lead, 4-2, with one run in the bottom of the second inning. Greiman hit a single, allowing Kramer to reach home.
Douglas responded with one run in the top of the third inning to narrow Torrington’s lead, 4-3.
The Tigers battled back in the fourth inning, shutting out Douglas in the top. Sandusky fielded a fly ball at center field and Greiman picked up a grounder from the pitcher’s mound, sending the ball to Hibben on first. Greiman went on to strike out Douglas’ third runner.
Three runs by the Tigers in the bottom of the fourth inning clinched the win for Torrington. Shields doubled for two RBI while Albaugh singled to send one home.
Overall, Torrington tallied 10 hits. Shields posted two hits for three RBI while Greiman collected three hits and one RBI. Kramer, Hibben, Albaugh, Sandusky and Kelly each contributed one hit.
Greiman pitched for Torrington for five innings, striking out four. Sandusky came in as relief.
Laramie – Game 1
Laramie opened with one run in the bottom of the first inning while shutting out the Tigers in the top.
Torrington rallied in the top of the second inning when Hibben hit a home run into center field to tie the game, 1-1.
Two runs by Laramie in the bottom of the third inning and four in the fourth placed the Rangers ahead, 7-1.
Digging deep, the Tigers fought back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning while shutting out Laramie in the bottom.
Moorehouse commenced the top of the third with a single for one RBI. Garrett Hager doubled to send one runner home while Albaugh scored on a dropped third strike.
Torrington tied the game, 8-8, with a 4-1 run in the sixth inning. In the top, Hibben hit a triple for one run. Moorehouse and Albaugh both doubled for one RBI each while Shields singled to drive one runner home.
Albaugh hit a decisive single in the top of the eighth inning to send Shields home and break the deadlock to pull the Tigers ahead, 9-8.
Torrington’s fielders stopped the Laramie offense in its tracks with three outs in the bottom of the eighth. Sandusky struck out one. Hager fielded a ground ball at third base before Greiman, playing catcher, sent the ball to Hager to pick off a runner attempting to steal third base.
The Tigers netted 14 hits in the first game versus the Rangers. Hibben set the pace offensively with four hits for two RBI. Albaugh collected three hits for two RBI with Moorehouse going 2-2 and Shields 3-1.
Moorehouse pitched 5.2 innings for Torrington, striking out four. Sandusky stepped in as relief for two innings, striking out two.
Laramie – Game 2
Torrington won the first inning, 2-1. In the top of the first, Moorehouse singled for one RBI and Hibben reached home on an error.
A single run by Laramie in the bottom of the third inning resulted in a 2-2 stalemate.
Both teams tallied three runs in the fifth inning and the game remained tied, 5-5.
Kramer opened the top of the third inning with a single for one RBI. Greiman hit a grounder to drive Kramer home. A sacrifice fly by Hibben sent Greiman to home plate.
Once again, it all came down to the final seventh inning. The Tigers scored a single run in the top of the seventh to capture the lead, 6-5, when a sacrifice grounder by Greiman allowed Kramer to score.
Torrington shut out Laramie in the bottom of the seventh. Shields fielded a fly ball in left field while Hibben caught a second fly at center field. Albaugh struck out the third runner.
The Tigers totaled 10 runs against Laramie, led by Moorehouse with three. Kramer and Kelly both tallied two runs with one apiece by Greiman, Shields and Hibben.
Leftie pitcher Hibben struck out 10 over the course of five innings. Albaugh played relief, striking out one.
