Thunder posts five wins at WYCO

CHEYENNE – The Torrington Thunder 14U girls softball team set the pace at the WYCO tournament in Cheyenne, bagging three wins over the course the event on Saturday and Sunday, June 21-22.

The Torrington Thunder 12U and 10U teams also competed at the tournament with both squads securing one win apiece.

Saturday’s action featured three round-robin games for each team. A team’s performance on Saturday determined its seed in the bracket-style playoffs on Sunday.

The Thunder 14U team posted a 2-1 record on Saturday with victories against the Casper Rebels (8-6) and the Rock Springs Storm (15-5). Torrington fell to Cheyenne’s WYCO team, 17-2, in the first game.

The 14U advanced to the the playoffs on Sunday to defeat the Rebels, 18-12. In the second playoff round, the Thunder 14U came up short against WYCO, 15-0.

Torrington’s 10U softball team fell to the Laramie Lightening (12-5), the Casper Valor Valkyrie (15-5) and the Cheyenne Extreme (18-1) in round-robin play on Saturday.

A reenergized 10U team returned to the field for the playoffs on Sunday determined to capture a win. Torrington went on to defeat the Casper Rebels, 12-9. Progressing to the second playoff round, the 10U fell to the WYCO Raiders, 14-5.

The Thunder 12U team battled back from a 10-7 loss to WYCO in the first game on Saturday to overwhelm the Casper Rebels, 17-3. The third game in pool play pitted Torrington against the Cheyenne Extreme with the Thunder coming up short, 15-1.

In the first round of the t12U playoffs, the Thunder fell to eam Prodigy out of Colorado, 7-3.

14U Game 2 – Casper Rebels

The Thunder opened the first inning by shutting out Casper in the top. Jenica Steely struck out two from the mound before Casper grounded out to Kinley Fisher on second base.

Torrington took control of the scoreboard with four runs in the bottom of the first. Makayla Burkart tripled for two RBI. Jadah Jacobson sent one runner home with a single and Emily Audette sacrificed a grounder for Burkart to reach home.

Casper narrowed Torrington’s lead to a single run, 4-3, with three runs in the ensuing two innings.

The Rebels widened their advantage, 6-4, by posting three runs in the top of the fourth.

The Thunder blasted back in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs. Emily Audette tripled for two RBI while Steely singled for one RBI. Fisher stole home for the fourth run.

Torrington collected 10 hits against Casper, led by Burkart and Illy Sanchez with two apiece. Willow Villamor, Jacobsen, Emmelin Matlock, Emily Audette, Fisher and Steely each recorded one.

Steely pitched the first 1.2 innings for the Thunder, striking out three. Matlock and Emily Audette played relief with Audette striking out one.

14U Game 3 – Rock Springs

The Rock Springs Storm established an early 5-4 lead following a neck-and-neck first inning.

Torrington pulled ahead, 7-5, with a 3-0 run in the second inning.

In the top of the second, Jacobsen struck out one from the mound. The Storm lined out to Jacobsen before sending a pop fly to Burkart at shortstop.

Torrington collected three runs in the bottom of the second. Burkart doubled for one RBI and reached home on a passed ball. A single by Matlock sent one runner home.

The Thunder kept Rock Springs scoreless in the top of the third inning. Jacobsen struck out one and fielded a ground ball. The Storm hit a fly ball to Matlock on first base for the third out.

Torrington clinched its win with eight runs in the bottom of the third. Burkart paced the Thunder offense with a triple for two RBI. Emily Audette, Steely, Fisher and Tori Fowler each singled for one RBI. Fisher reached home on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Jacobsen sent Sanchez home.

Torrington recorded 15 hits against Rock Springs. Burkart and Steely both collected three with two apiece by Emily Audette and Fisher. Katelyn Audette, Jacobsen, Matlock, Fowler and Sanchez each contributed one hit.

Emily Audette opened as pitcher while Jacobsen played relief, striking out four.

14U Playoffs – Casper Rebels

The Thunder left it all on the field in the first inning of the playoff game against Casper with Torrington posting 13 runs in the top and holding the Rebels to six in the bottom.

Burkart opened the first with a triple for two RBI and went on to double for three RBI.

Jacobsen hit a double and a single for two RBI. Matlock tripled and singled for two RBI. Emily Audette doubled to send one runner home and Steely hit a single for one RBI. Fisher and Jacobsen both stole home.

Burkart stepped up to bat in the top of the second inning and hit a grand slam into fight field to pull Torrington up by four more runs.

The Thunder shut out Casper in the bottom of the second. Burkart struck out two from the mound and the Rebels grounded out to Jacobsen at shortstop.

Torrington collected 24 hits against Casper. Burkart dominated the Thunder offense with three hits and nine RBI. Sanchez recorded four hits with three each by Jacobsen and Steely. Katelyn Audette, Emily Audette, Matlock, Fisher and Villamor each contributed two with one from Fowler.

Jacobsen opened as pitcher with Burkart and Steely playing relief.

12U rundown

Torrington fell in a close first game to WYCO, 10-7. The Thunder won the first inning, 4-0. WYCO turned the tables in the second inning with a 6-0 run to take the lead, 6-4.

WYCO outmaneuvered Torrington, 4-3, in the third inning to clinch the win.

Torrington collected six hits against WYCO. Reese Hendricks led with two while Julia Stienmetz, Regan Nicolay, Zaevrie Rios and Alyssa Schamel each posted one.

Kenlee Struble opened as pitcher, striking out one. Rios played relief, striking out three.

The Thunder battled back in the second game against the Casper Rebels to punch in a 17-3 win. Torrington set the pace with a 10-0 run in the first inning. Casper managed to tally three runs in the top of the second inning, but the effort was too little, too late. The Thunder rounded out the game with seven runs in the bottom of the second.

The Thunder recorded eight hits versus Casper. Hendricks contributed two with one apiece by Stienmetz, Schamel, Harper Reimers, LeeAnn Tittel, Bristol Hoffman and Struble.

Lily Lopez pitched both innings for the Thunder, striking out six.

In the third game, Torrington fell to the Cheyenne Extreme, 15-1. The Extreme posted six runs in the top of the first inning and five in the second before going on a 4-1 run in the third.

Stienmetz, Nicolay and Schamel each tallied one hit against Casper.

Nicolay pitched the first inning, striking out two. Mallory Roth came in as relief.

The first round of the playoffs pitted the Thunder against Team Prodigy with Torrington coming up short, 7-3.

Torrington outscored Prodigy in the first inning, 2-1. Prodigy responded with five runs in the top of the second while holding the Thunder to one in the bottom. An additional run from Prodigy in the third inning topped off the Colorado team’s win.

Torrington totaled four hits against Prodigy with one apiece by Lopez, Hendricks, Stienmetz and Tittel.

Rios pitched three innings for the Thunder, striking out three.

10U summary

Pool play on Saturday opened with the Thunder 10U falling to Laramie, 12-5. Laramie clinched its win with 6-1 runs in both the first and second innings.

Torrington collected three hits against Laramie with two by Jerra Stienmetz and one from Hattie Hoffman.

The Thunder’s pitching staff for the first game consisted of Rylin Holmes and Brooke Larsen.

In the second game on Saturday, Torrington came up short to Casper, 15-5. Casper established an early 6-0 lead in the first inning. Both teams collected three hits in the second inning before Casper outmaneuvered the Thunder in the third inning, 6-2.

Caylee Mann recorded Torrington’s single hit against Casper. 

Hoffman pitched the first 1.21 innings for Torrington, striking out six. Abigail Audette played relief, striking out one.

The Thunder dropped the third game of pool play to the Cheyenne Extreme, 18-1. The Extreme sealed the deal with 6-0 runs in both the first and second innings.

Torrington totaled two hits against Cheyenne with Jerra Stienmetz and Josie Griggs each contributing one.

Jerra Stienmetz opened as pitcher while Abigail Audette played relief and struck out one.

Digging deep on Sunday, Torrington rallied in the first round of Sunday’s playoffs to defeat the Casper Rebels, 12-9.

Torrington opened with a 6-4 run in the first inning. Casper responded with two runs in the top of the second inning while shutting out Torrington in the bottom to deadlock the game, 6-6.

Leaving it all on the field in the third inning, the Thunder outscored the Rebels, 6-3.

Torrington posted two hits against Casper with one each by Holmes and Larsen.

Hoffman pitched all three innings for the Thunder, striking out five.

In the second round of the playoffs, Torrington fell to WYCO, 14-5. WYCO outmaneuvered the Thunder in the first inning by a 6-2 margin and pulled ahead with a 6-3 run in the second.

Torringon’s three hits against WYCO consisted of one each from Jerra Stienmetz, Berklee Kistler and Griggs.

Larsen, Abigail Audette and Holmes each pitched for the Thunder in the final game against WYCO.
