Summer reading challenge heats up

TORRINGTON –The Goshen County Library’s 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, Book Wyrms: Devouring Worlds One Book at a Time, is well underway but it’s not too late to dive in and join the fun.

Running through July 31, the challenge encourages young readers under 18 to track their reading time and submit book reviews using the Beanstack App. In return, they earn in-app badges which are redeemed as reward beads for a custom bracelet. Challenge participants also earn tickets which can be entered for prize drawings at the end of the summer.

The library also hosts a weekly Summer Reading Program every Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. through July 23, featuring storytime to bring books to life. The library has set a county-wide goal of 275,000 minutes, making every page turn part of a larger community effort.

Adults aren’t left out of the adventure. The library is also offering an adult reading challenge. Adults are challenged with completing a Bingo card where readers can complete a card with a mix of reading minutes and activities like reading specific topics and visiting the library. Adults can also earn tickets towards a drawing at the end of the summer. The library is also hosting an adult weekly crafts and chat sessions on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.

Research shows that summer reading programs are more than just fun—they’re essential for maintaining academic progress. Studies have found that children who do not read over the summer can lose up to two months of reading achievement, a phenomenon known as the “summer slide.” Programs that encourage regular reading, offer access to books, and provide motivation through activities and incentives can significantly boost reading skills and confidence. Public library programs, in particular, help bridge educational gaps by offering free, inclusive opportunities for learning.

Whether you’re a seasoned reader or just getting started, the Book Wyrms challenge offers a fun and engaging way to stay connected, creative, and curious all summer long. Stop by the Goshen County Library or visit their website to get started—there’s still plenty of time to join the adventure!
