School of Music finale on inaugural year

TORRINGTON — Mrs. F’s School of Music held two Spring Concerts this week at Our Savior Lutheran Church. The first concert on Sunday featured groups from the school’s Friday classes and students taking private lessons, including three group singing classes, two percussion classes, and an advanced ensemble focusing on religious music.

On Wednesday, two homeschool music classes took the stage. F’s School of Music opened at the beginning of this school year and the Spring Concert was a showcase of the students’ progress in rhythm and vocal skills.

The Sunday concert with the Friday Enrichment classes and private lesson students opened with a beautiful rendition of the traditional spiritual “Yonder Come Day” from the Group Singing 3. More than a dozen performances followed, from the youngest students performing the well-loved song “I Love the Mountains” to a bucket drum performance of Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” and even a highly intricate arrangement of “The Ash Grove” from Singing Groups 2 and 3. The concert closed with “Night Song,” a modern track made popular by the group CityAlight. The students, from the youngest elementary schoolers through high school musicians, brought harmonies and a triumphant conclusion to the evening.

One highlight of the concert was a recognition of Torrington High School senior Marcus Jones who will be attending Western Nebraska Community College on a vocal performance scholarship. Jones performs with Exalt!, the class focusing on the Christian music tradition in multiple parts.

The concert featuring the homeschool music classes also highlighted both religious, traditional, and modern song selections. The two classes performed some songs alone, and the two classes joined for Paul Jennings’ arrangement of “Mister Sun” and closed with the praise tune “Jesus Strong and Kind.” The more than a dozen homeschool students brought a professionalism to the performance that showed a maturity beyond their years.

Courtney Firminhac, teacher and driving force behind the School of Music, said that she was so glad that the students were able to display their skills for family and friends.

“The students have made wonderful progress since our last concert,” she said. “The performances reflected their increase in skill and levels of confidence. I’m really excited to see what we can do in the future,” Firminhac said.

The school of music plans on hosting one-day camps and sample classes in July and August, and registration for the 2025-2026 school year will be opened this summer on the Mrs. F’s School of Music Facebook page and at www.mrsfschoolofmusic.com.
