Rods roar back into Torrington

TORRINGTON – As the morning sun began to warm downtown Torrington Saturday, a rare yet powerful sight of shining paint and chrome, along with the occasional roar of an engine had taken over a usually quiet area.

The Scottsbluff Valley Street Rods (SVSR) Car Club had returned to Torrington once again. With well over a hundred newly restored vintage cars perfectly lined up along downtown Main Street, thousands of Goshen County residents were eager to catch a glimpse of some serious achievements of the auto industry.

The SVSR, at least for one day, had seemingly brought back the residents of Goshen into a time warp as hundreds of popular cars from the past returned so many people to a different time in life.

Happily mingling up and down the streets among the masterful paint jobs on each rod were longtime Goshen residents Carolyn and Toby Lewis. Both Carolyn and Toby reminisced on how nostalgic the show can in fact be for some, despite an overwhelming display of muscle, might and fury.

“This is the best one I’ve seen so far,” Carolyn Lewis said with a smile. “It just brings us back to so many good memories with what’s been such a good life for us.”

While the droves of people casually walked up and down the streets enjoying everything the members of SVSR had to offer, the warm aroma of fresh and real food filled the air.

Numerous food trucks and booths enhanced the event, including Mike’s Wild Dogs, who satisfied quite a few bellies with a wide variety of distinctive styled hot dogs.

Thanks to the SVSR, every key ingredient to a successful Torrington event was included. The rods themselves being the main event were well intact. The amazing smell of hot dogs, barbecue, tacos, and beautiful freshly squeezed lemonade made sure no one went hungry or thirsty. Games and blowup bounce houses made sure children were included, while dad could admire a brand-new installed engine.

According to SVSR President, Travis Patocka, perhaps the one thing that proved to be the icing on one delicious cake, was in fact the live music performed all day long.

“I think honestly it was the live band, The Automatic Drifters,” Patocka said. “We were able to bring them all the way from Denver to this show. They said they enjoyed it and had a really good crowd from the afternoon. They are cars guys too.”

The President further stated that with all crucial factors in place for a successful car town car show, the entire day on Saturday certainly did not disappoint.

“We had well over 120 cars entered,” Patocka said. “With a few thousand people walking the street, obviously a huge part of the community showed up. The best part about the day, was genuinely the kids. They were able to have coloring book contests and all the other stuff like the bounce houses. All that we did for the kids. Of course, then we had all the food vendors. Everyone was fat and happy. We were just hoping the weather was going to be good, and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. We are definitely going to have another show next year in September sometime, we just haven’t set the date quite yet.”
