GOSHEN COUNTY – The Goshen County Library recently announced they had been one of 300 libraries to participate in the third round of Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities, an initiative of the American Library Association in collaboration with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries. According to the announcement, the national program offers small and rural libraries with resources to improve accessibility allowing libraries the opportunity to better serve individuals with disabilities.
“The $20,000 grant will be used to install accessible shelving and a wheelchair-accessible public computer desk, ensuring that all library visitors, including those with mobility challenges, can navigate and utilize library resources with greater ease,” the press release explained.
Library director, Cristine Braddy express sincere gratitude in being selected as a winning county library.
“’We are honored to receive this grant, enabling us to make meaningful improvements that enhance the comfort and accessibility of our library for all,’” Braddy said in the release. “’Libraries should be welcoming spaces for everyone, and these improvements will help ensure that all residents, regardless of ability, feel comfortable and empowered to use our services.’”
The library staff will complete specialized training on leading community conversations, as part of the initiative, the release explained.
“They will then host a discussion on accessibility in public spaces, gathering insights from the community to help shape future enhancements and services,” the release said. “For many Goshen County residents, the library serves as a critical resource for education, technology access and community engagement. By removing physical barriers, these updates will allow more people to fully participate in everything the library has to offer.”

“Since 2014, ALA’s Libraries Transforming Communities initiative has helped libraries reimagine their role in supporting local communities. Through training and grant opportunities, libraries across the country have been able to foster community dialogue, address critical issues, and improve access to library services,” the release concluded.
