LFL boys finish second as a team at state track meet

Posted

CASPER – The Lingle-Fort Laramie (LFL) Lady Doggers track team battled through three intense days of competition at the state track meet in Casper to capture the 1A Wyoming team title.

The competition between the Lady Doggers and Cokeville for the top spot on the team leaderboard remained up in the air until the final event on Saturday, May 24. LFL’s 4x400-meter relay team – seniors Grace Gibson, Kenzie Wilkins and Jada Kaufman and sophomore Addi Wilkins – dug deep when it mattered the most to snag gold and score the 10 points the Lady Doggers needed to secure No. 1.

When the dust settled in the girls’ division, LFL led with 95 points, followed by Cokeville in second place at 92.50 points and Southeast third at 87 points. In a competition where every point mattered, the Lady Doggers tallied 19 top eight medals and three golds.

The Lady Doggers title is the 12th Wyoming outdoor track championship in program history. Each of the 14 girls representing LFL at state contributed valuable points to the team's final tally.

The LFL boys fought their way to second place as a team, collecting 18 top eight medals and three golds to secure 99.50 team points. Burlington finished first at 119.50 points with Saratoga third at 73.50.

"What a great weekend for Dogger track and field," coach Mike Lashley said. "Both teams competed extremely well for the entire three days. Bringing home championship and runner-up trophies is a testament to the grit, determination and work ethic of our athletes. Some of them even switched to new events during the season to make this happen."

The "team first" mentality demonstrated by LFL tracksters throughout the season played a crucial role in the team's success, Lashley added.

"It was never about their personal glory," Lashley wrote. "It was always about the  team. They are an amazing group of young men and women. It truly was a special season."
