GERING – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lady Lancers golf team rounded out its inaugural season at the NJCAA Women Plains District Tournament at Monument Shadows Golf Course in Gering.
The regional tournament featured one round of golf on both Monday and Tuesday, April 28-29.
The Lady Lancers placed sixth as a team with a two-day gross of 729 strokes. EWC improved from 369 strokes on the first day to 360 on the second. Dodge City Community College came in first with 645 strokes.
“We didn’t have the district championship that we had hoped for,” coach Zach Smith said. “We just took too many big numbers on both days for us to recover. I’m very proud of the way the girls fought until the very end on both days.”
Freshman Jessica Applegarth led the EWC women on the individual leaderboard, advancing to the No. 14 spot with 170 strokes following two rounds (26 over par). Applegarth progressed from 87 strokes on Monday to 83 on Tuesday.
Fellow freshman Elliann Irick took 24th place with a two-day tally of 186 strokes. Irick shot 94 on the first day and 92 the second.
Bailey Watson, also a freshman, came in 26th place at 189 strokes. Watson collected 91 strokes in the first round and 98 in the second.
Freshman Georgie Paterakis finished 27th at 190 strokes, improving from 99 on Monday to 91 on Tuesday.
Fellow freshman Shayla Clayton shot 97-94 to clinch 28th place at 191 strokes.
The Lady Lancers posted a successful 2024-2025 season – the first season EWC fielded a women’s golf team.
This spring, the Lady Lancers went on a three-tournament winning streak, battling their way to the No. 1 spot on the team leaderboard at EWC’s spring invitational on April 11, winning the Northeastern Junior College tournament on April 9 and a finishing first at the Otero College spring invitational on March 21.
“I think the team played great in the first year of our program’s history,” coach Smith added. “We won seven or eight times this year, which I would have never guessed coming into the season because it was a brand new team on campus. The girls have a lot to be proud of and I can’t wait until next year.”
