RAWLINS – Conference play is heating up for 3A squads with the Torrington High School Lady Blazers volleyball team splitting the weekend against Wheatland and Rawlins.
On Friday, October 18, Torrington came up short against conference rival Wheatland, 3-0, at an away match.
The Lady Blazers rebounded on Saturday against Rawlins on the road, sweeping the Lady Outlaws in three, point-for-point sets.
Torrington currently sits fourth in the 3A Southeast Quadrant with a conference record of 6-3. The Lady Blazers host undefeated Douglas for the final match of the regular season and senior recognition on Thursday, October 24. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Wheatland
Wheatland won the match against Torrington on Friday in three sets, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-14.
The Lady Blazers tallied 28 kills against Wheatland, led by senior Olive Osmera and junior Natalie Long with six kills apiece. Junior Brooklyn Asmus and sophomore Zoe Wilson each tallied five kills, while junior Trishell Pontarolo contributed three, senior Teryn Stokes two and freshman Ellis Mortimore one.
On the service line, Osmera, Wilson and Pontarolo each aced one serve. Long played setter and delivered 15 assists.
Defensively, Long, Mortimore, Pontarolo and Stokes each reached up for one block. Hurley covered the floor as libero for the Lady Blazers and totaled 24 digs.
Rawlins
The first set between Torrington and Rawlins tied at one before Hurley aced a serve to pull the Lady Blazers up, 2-1. Torrington remained ahead, 6-5, with a kill by Asmus.
Wilson aced a serve and the Lady Blazers reached 21. A kill by Wilson resulted in game point, 25-16.
The second set proved neck-and-neck. Long aced a serve and Torrington found itself up by three, 14-11. A block by Pontarolo and Wilson expanded the Lady Blazers’ lead to five, 19-14.
Rawlins tied the set at 20 before Asmus broke the stalemate with a kill. Osmera defended the net with a block and the Lady Blazers continued to lead, 22-21.
A three-point run by Torrington resulted in game point, 25-22.
The third set also came down to the wire with a deadlock at 24. Wilson slammed over a kill, assisted by Mortimore, to pull Torrington up, 25-24. Mortimore aced a serve for game point, 26-24.
Wilson set the momentum for the Lady Blazer offense with nine kills. Asmus contributed five kills, Long and Stokes four each with one by Osmera and Pontarolo.
Osmera served up five aces with Mortimore acing four. Hurley, Long, Wilson and junior Nakaya Sippel each tallied one ace.
Long delivered 11 assists and Hurley totaled 15 digs.
On defense, Wilson recorded two blocks with one each by Osmera, Asmus and Pontarolo.
