Lady Blazers play with tenacity

TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School Lady Blazers soccer team demonstrated grit during an intense, neck-and-neck home game against conference rival Buffalo on Saturday, May 10.

Buffalo pulled ahead in the first half with two goals but both teams netted a goal in a physical second half as the Lady Blazers offense stepped up the pressure.

The final score favored Buffalo, 3-1, although Torrington made plenty of solid plays with an aggressive offense and defense.

“The girls did well with Buffalo,” coach Tyler Cram said. “It was not the outcome we were hoping for but the team stayed engaged and worked hard. It was especially awesome that our freshman Rosa Munoz was able to get us on the board with a goal.”

On Friday, May 10, Torrington played a tough Douglas Bearcats varsity team on the road. Douglas came into the weekend the No. 1 team in 3A East with an undefeated 6-0 conference record and went on to defeat Torrington, 10-0.

“Douglas is always a tough team and does well showing us areas where we need to work,” Cram added.

The Lady Blazers host their final home game of the season against Newcastle on Friday, May 16 at 4 p.m. The evening will feature senior recognition for both the Lady Blazers and Blazers.

“With the learning and experience from these last two games, we are eagerly looking forward to our next game against Newcastle,” Cram said.

Buffalo

The Lady Bison scored two goals in the opening 10 minutes of regulation before the Lady Blazers defense came together to shut out Buffalo for the remaining 30 minutes of the half.

Defensive hustle by sophomore Madison Hatch kept the ball away from Torrington’s goal area. Powerful kicks by Hatch, senior Kayden Tucker, junior Natalie Lira, senior Rachel Gomes and junior Salma Beltran cleared the backfield and midfield.

Junior goalie Avary Rising stepped up and collected seven saves in the first half.

On offense, the Torrington offense began to strike with increasing intensity in the final 10 minutes of the first half, culminating in a shot on goal by senior Marisol Munoz.

The halftime score placed Buffalo ahead, 2-0.

Digging deep, the Lady Blazers offense shifted into high gear in the second half. Torrington spent more time in Buffalo’s territory with attacks led by Marisol Munoz, junior Kirstin Prado and freshman Peyton Lincoln.

Midway into the second half, Prado lined up a corner kick to Rosa Munoz. Taking the ball, Munoz shot it straight into the Lady Bison’s goal.

A strong Torrington defense held Buffalo to a single goal at the beginning of the second half. Rising picked up seven additional saves while defensive plays by Tucker, Beltran and Hatch prevented the Lady Bison from scoring for the remainder of the game.
