TORRINGTON – The final home matchup of the 2025 spring soccer season between the Torrington High School Lady Blazers and the Newcastle Lady Dogies came down to an overtime shootout at the Old Wiseman Field on Friday, May 16.
Torrington battled Newcastle to a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the end of regulation. Newcastle ultimately outscored the Lady Blazers in penalty kicks, 3-1, in the overtime shootout to clinch the conference victory.
Torrington’s season ended on Friday with the Lady Blazers demonstrating marked improvement over the 2024 season. Torrington bagged two overall victories and one conference win in 2025. The Lady Blazers defeated Newcastle in another overtime shootout on April 17 and beat Rawlins on May 2.
“I was really proud of how the girls played on Friday,” coach Tyler Cram said. “Unfortunately, it was not the outcome we worked for. To lose in shootouts is never an easy loss. The girls played hard but even with a controlling second half, we were not able to capitalize on the opportunities we had.”
Torrington took the opportunity on Friday to honor its seniors – Emilia Bookout, Rachel Gomes, Marisol Munoz and Kayden Tucker.
“The seniors will be missed but hopefully the remaining girls will take the progress made this year and continue it to the next,” Cram added.
In Friday’s game between Torrington and Newcastle, the Lady Dogies scored the first goal at 29 minutes to lead at halftime, 1-0.
Junior goalie Avary Rising collected six saves in the first half, including a save on a penalty kick several minutes before halftime.
Torrington’s offense attacked Newcastle’s territory in the first half, culminating in a shot on goal by Munoz.
The Lady Blazers offense rallied in the second half with repeated strikes on the Lady Dogies side of the field, including a shot on goal by junior Hallie Fuller.
Munoz took possession of the ball at 32:30 in the second half to score a goal for the Lady Blazers, assisted by Tucker.
Rising picked up four saves in the second half while a solid line of defenders in the backfield, including junior Natalie Lira, junior Selma Beltran and sophomore Madison Hatch – shut out Newcastle.
