Hoopsters represent at Panhandle Prep all-stars

GERING – Top graduated senior athletes from across southeastern Wyoming and western Nebraska battled at the 31st annual Panhandle Prep Sports Magazine all-star basketball game in Gering on Friday, May 30.

The evening opened with the girls’ game pitting the Blue Team coached by Torrington High School’s Chris Strampe against the Red Team coached by Tom Weber of South Platte.

The Blue Team featured Torrington graduates Jaycee Hurley, Olive Osmera and Teryn Stokes. Madix McIntosh was also selected for the roster.

When the dust settled in the girls’ game, the Blue Team led on the scoreboard by a 22-point margin, 85-63.

The boys’ game followed as the Blue Team (coached by Morrill’s Terry Lofink) squared off against the Red Team (led by coach Jordan Mills of Alliance).

The roster for the Blue Team included Torrington’s Weston Dyer, Lingle-Fort Laramie’s (LFL) Ned Nelson and Kannon Tippetts of Southeast. The Red Team consisted of Roberts and  LFL’s Elijah Hatch.

The Blue Team won the boys game, 99-88.

Roberts won the halftime dunk contest.

Girls game

The Blue Team won the first quarter, 24-11, before outscoring the Red Team, 18-16, in the second quarter.

The halftime score favored the Blue Team, 42-27. Strokes rustled a steal in the second quarter and Hurley netted a free throw.

The Blue Team continued to dominate the scoreboard in the second half, tossing in 43 points while a gritty defense held the Red Team to 36 points.

Osmera lined up for a big outside shot in the final minute of regulation. Stokes scored from inside the paint in the second half as well.

Boys game

The first quarter between the Red and Blue teams came down to a single possession with the Red Team leading, 20-17, as the second quarter began.

The Red Team outmaneuvered the Blue Team, 32-28, in the second quarter to remain up, 52-45, at halftime.

A point-for-point battle ensued early in the third quarter before the Blue Team took charge of the scoreboard to lead by 10 points, 72-62, as the final quarter commenced.

The Blue Team netted 27 points in the fourth quarter to 26 by the Red Team to clinch the win.

Roberts and Nelson both recorded double digit scoring for the Red Team and Blue teams, respectively. Roberts finished the game with 17 points while Nelson tallied 13, including two outside shots.

Dyer contributed seven points to the Blue Team’s final tally, highlighted by a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter. Tippetts and Hatch both tossed in close-range shots for their respective teams.
