GOSHEN COUNTY – The Goshen County Task Force (GCTF) is joining national efforts this month to raise awareness of domestic violence through fundraising events and community outreach, emphasizing the widespread impact of abuse in local communities.
“Statistically, one in four persons will experience domestic violence and/or sexual assault in their lifetimes,” said Michelle Powell, GCTF director. “GCTF joins the national effort this October to uplift the needs, voices and experiences of survivors.”
Congress declared October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989, establishing a dedicated time for communities nationwide to focus attention on the issue and support survivors. Since then, organizations across the country have used the month to educate the public and raise funds for critical services.
The task force focuses on two major fundraisers during the month: the Purple Doves Campaign and the Race to End Domestic Violence. Both events aim to generate financial support while bringing the community together around a common cause.
Local statistics mirror national trends
Goshen County has experienced domestic violence incidents at rates comparable to national averages and in some months even higher, according to Powell. The local impact is significant and affects families throughout the community.
“Our statistics indicate 31% of adults (both male and female) in Goshen County have accessed services of GCTF in the past,” Powell said. “The majority of contacts were by females. We help victims take action to de-escalate these interactions.”
The scope of the problem extends beyond those who seek help. “Based on statistics for Goshen County, almost 4,000 people will be affected by these crimes,” Powell said. “Our own records show an average of 1.65 persons contact us for help.”
Powell emphasized these statistics only include those who have contacted GCTF for assistance, suggesting the actual number of people affected may be higher. Many victims never reach out for support due to fear, shame or lack of awareness about available resources.
Purple doves campaign
The Purple Dove campaign began Oct. 1 at Main Street Market, offering community members an easy way to contribute to the cause during their regular shopping trips.
At checkout, checkers offer shoppers an opportunity to purchase a purple dove with a donation of any amount. Contributions can range from spare change left over from a purchase to more substantial donations. Each purple dove purchased represents a commitment to supporting survivors and raising awareness about domestic violence.
Donations can also be dropped off at the GCTF office at 1933 Main Street or mailed to P.O. Box 361, Torrington, WY. All donations are tax deductible, allowing contributors to support the cause while receiving tax benefits.
Race to end domestic violence
GCTF will host the annual Race to End Domestic Violence on Oct. 18 at Goshen County Fairgrounds. The event combines competitive barrel racing with community engagement and fundraising opportunities.
Contestants of all ages can participate in the barrel race, making it an inclusive event for families and individuals throughout the community. The event also features a silent auction with a long list of exciting items and an opportunity to visit local artisans and food vendors in the arena building.
Admission is free and doors open for audience members at 11 a.m. For barrel race details, contact Nikki Davis at 575-4721.
The combination of activities creates an atmosphere where serious issues can be addressed in an accessible and community-friendly environment. Participants and attendees alike contribute to raising awareness while enjoying the festivities.
How donations help
All donations collected at these events and throughout the year are spent in Goshen County to aid survivors of domestic violence. The organization maintains a strict policy on fund allocation to ensure money goes directly to those in need.
Assistance includes escorts to court procedures with protection orders, emergency shelter, cell phones, food and transportation to relocate victims of abuse. These services provide immediate support during critical moments when victims are taking steps to leave dangerous situations.
Funds are strictly used to aid victims and not used to support personnel costs, leases or other administrative expenses. This ensures every dollar donated directly impacts the lives of survivors seeking safety and stability.
