Blazers fall to Scottsbluff

TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School Blazers soccer team crossed the state line to play Nebraska rival Scottsbluff on Tuesday, April 22.

The Blazers offense struck first in the opening quarter with a goal by senior Elijah Hatch off an assist from fellow senior Kaiden Riggs. A tenacious Torrington defense shut out Scottsbluff in the first half for the Blazers to lead, 1-0, at halftime.

Scottsbluff responded in the second half with a four-goal run to pull ahead and post the win, 4-1, at the final buzzer.

“I thought the boys played hard but they ran out of stamina in the second half,” coach Jeshua Arnusch said. “We had a big layer from our defense to midfield because our defense was dropping back too far. That is something we can definitely improve on.”

Despite dropping the game to Scottsbluff on Tuesday, the Blazers remain at the top of the 3A East leaderboard with an undefeated 3-0 conference record and a 4-2 overall record. Torrington defeated conference rival Buffalo, 1-0, on March 29. The Blazers won overtime shootouts against both Worland (April 4) and Rawlins (April 11) to scoop up two additional conference wins.

Torrington is back in action on Friday with a home game against Douglas. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Old Wiseman Field. Douglas brings a 1-2 conference and 2-5 overall record to the pitch.

“We need to move on and get ready for Douglas,” coach Arnusch said. “They are always a tough, defensive-minded team.”
