CASPER – The Torrington High School Lady Blazers track team battled its way to the No. 4 spot on the team leaderboard at the Glen Legler Early Bird meet hosted by Natrona County High School on Thursday, April 3.
The Torrington girls collected 64 team points to finish ahead of nine other teams from across Wyoming. The Lady Blazers took the No. 1 spot out of 3A and 2A programs at the meet with 4A schools Laramie, Natrona County and Kelly Walsh dominating the top three.
The Torrington boys’ team came in 12th place with nine team points. Several boys’ events featured more than 100 entries with a 200-plus roster in the 100-meters.
Three gold medals anchored the Lady Blazers’ fourth-place finish at the meet. Junior Brooklyn Asmus snagged the No. 1 spot in both girls’ sprinting events.
Clocking the 100-meters in with a time of 12.35 seconds, Asmus clinched first place. The Torrington junior crossed the finish line 0.21 seconds ahead of Saige Gustafson, the runner-up from Natrona County.
In the 200-meters, Asmus left the competition in the dust with a first-place finish timed in at 25.05 seconds. Asmus beat the second-place finisher, Lainey Berryhill of Laramie, by 0.62 seconds.
Junior Trishell Pontarolo won the girls triple jump by a four-foot-plus margin and a new Torrington High School outdoor record. Pontarolo advanced to the No. 1 spot on the triple jump leaderboard with a mark of 38 feet, 2 inches. The runner-up, Erin Aune of Natrona County, finished with a mark of 34-00 ½.
Pontarolo’s leap on Thursday shattered the previous record set in 2014 by Avery Madden at 37-11 ½.
“The weather wasn’t great and it snowed on us a couple of times,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “Our athletes adapted and overcame the weather, though. I’m proud of the way our athletes didn’t use the cold and snow as an excuse to get in the way of their goals.”
Up next, Torrington tracksters are headed to an invitational hosted by Cheyenne East on Friday, April 11.
“We hope to get in a few more relay teams with good times (at Cheyenne) to give us more options at regionals,” Stienmetz added.
