SWEETWATER COUNTY – The Torrington High School Lady Blazers softball team boarded the bus for the long trip to Sweetwater County to play Green River and Rock Springs in back-to-back double-headers over the weekend.
The Lady Blazers split with their rivals, picking up one win against both the Green River Lady Wolves and the Rock Springs Lady Tigers.
On Friday, April 11, Torrington fell in the opening game against Green River, 9-2. Battling back in the second game, the Lady Blazers trounced the Lady Wolves, 14-9.
Saturday’s double-header between Torrington and Rock Springs followed a similar pattern. The Lady Blazers dropped the first game, 14-3. Digging deep, Torrington rallied in the second game to defeat the Lady Tigers, 12-11.
Green River – game two
The Lady Blazers opened the second game with three runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Rein Coulson hit a grounder for one RBI and scored on a passed ball. Junior Kennedy Reinhardt singled, driving junior Skyla Wunder home.
Torrington’s fielders shut out Green River in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Wolves ground out to sophomore Kadence Schamel at third and Schamel tossed the ball to fellow sophomore Aftyn Hager at first.
Senior Hope Hager fielded a grounder in center field, delivering the ball to sophomore Lyla Wernsman at second base for the first out. Wernsman tossed the ball to Aftyn Hager at first to complete the double play.
The Lady Blazers pulled ahead in an explosive second inning that saw Torrington outscore Green River, 6-2.
In the top of the second, Kadence Schamel doubled to drive Hope Hager home. Coulson followed up with a double for two RBI.
Skyla Wunder smashed a home run into left field for two runs.
Freshman Shaylyn Wunder scored the sixth run on a dropped third strike.
Torrington expanded its lead with two more runs in the top of the third inning. Coulson stepped up to bat and hit a big fly into center field.
Coulson paced the Torrington offense against Green River, collecting three hits for seven RBI.
Meyer and Reinhardt both tallied two runs with one apiece by Kadence Schamel, Skyla Wunder, Shaylyn Wunder, Aftyn Hager and Hope Hager.
Reinhardt opened as pitcher for Torrington, striking out two over 2.2 innings. Freshman Jadah Jacobson, junior Laney Grubbs and freshman Emily Audette played relief.
Rock Springs – game two
The first inning ended in a 3-3 tie. In the top, freshman Makayla Burkart doubled for three RBI.
Following a scoreless second inning, Rock Springs took the lead with seven runs in the third while holding Torrington to three. A sacrifice fly by Skyla Wunder resulted in one run while Burkart singled for two RBI.
Torrington responded to regain the lead with six runs in the top of the fifth. Hope Hager and Kadence Schamel both singled for one RBI apiece. Meyer sacrificed a fly for a run.
Coulson hit her second homer for the weekend, sending Aftyn Hager and Kadence Schamel home.
Burkart tallied three hits against Rock Springs for five RBI while Coulson collected four hits for three RBI.
Kadence Schamel and Hope Hager each recorded two hits with one apiece by Skyla Wunder, Wernsman, Aftyn Hager and Shaylyn Wunder.
Jacobson pitched the opening 1.3 innings for Torrington, striking out two. Freshman Ashlyn Schamel and Audette played relief with Audette striking out one.
