THS grapplers medal at Skyview in Colorado

THORNTON, COLORADO – The Torrington High School boys and girls wrestling teams proved their ability to compete against opponents from larger, out-of-state schools with exceptional performances at the annual Skyview Invitational in Thornton, Colorado, on Saturday, January 18.

The Blazer boys captured third place overall at the bracket-style meet with 152.5 points. The field contained 17 programs, primarily from schools in the Denver area and along Colorado’s Front Range.

Three Lady Blazers represented Torrington at the event and the girls advanced to 13th place out of 24 squads on the girls’ team leaderboard with 48 points.

Four Torrington athletes clinched the championship in their respective weight classes at Skyview. In the girls’ tournament, freshman Catherine Hendricks garnered gold while seniors Tyler Nicolay, Barrett Eichenberger and Kaden Romig snapped up the championship in the boys’ tournament.

A group of Torrington wrestlers competed at the Dogie Invite in Newcastle on January 17 with the boys’ team placing eighth at 75 points.

Skyview girls results

Hendricks progressed to the quarterfinals in the 120-pound bracket to pin Skyview’s Marylin Huerta 26 seconds into the match.

Squaring off against Eruka Peterson of Walsenburg in a neck-and-neck, three-period semifinal match, Hendricks won in a tie-breaker, 9-8.

In the championship match, Hendricks pinned Mead High School’s Erin Young with 56 seconds left in the third period.

Sophomore Jenna Woodard scooped up bronze in the 145-pound classification. Woodard felled Sterling’s Gracyn Vondy at 2 minutes, 32 seconds into the third-place match.

Skyview boysí results

Nicolay pinned Rocky Mountain High School’s Ben Kirchner with 18 seconds remaining in the first period of the 120-pound quarterfinal match.

The semifinals pitted Nicolay against Isaiah Archuleta of Skyview. Nicolay made quick work of his opponent, winning by fall midway in the first period.

Advancing to the first-place match, Nicolay defeated Lir Loughlin of Rocky Mountain by a 27-14 major decision.

In the 138-pound bracket, Barrett Eichenberger took down Mountain Vista’s Cooper Casanova 23 seconds into the second period of the quarterfinals.

Making his way to the semifinals, Eichenberger pinned Gavin Kitzman of Weld Central in 38 seconds.

In the championship match, Eichenberger battled his opponent, Anthony Gonzalez of Skyview, into the third period to win, 8-3.

Romig promptly pinned Garret Drullinger of Liberty High School only 20 seconds into the quarterfinals at 165 pounds.

The semifinals found Romig defeating Mountain Vista’s Kuyden Kim by fall with 18 seconds to go in the first period.

Progressing to the fnal match, Romig pinned Horizon’s Colton Scott at 1:38.

Junior Colby Sandusky clinched second place in the 150-pound bracket. Sandusky pinned Skyview’s Juan Rodriguez in the quarterfinals before winning by fall against Cristiano Ontiveros of Weld Central in the semifinals.

Junior Brendan Woodard snagged silver at 157 pounds. In the quarterfinals, Woodard pinned Denver North’s Axel Wolf and went on to defeat Yusuf Muhammad of Rocky Mountain by a 16-3 major decision in the semifinals.

In the 175-pound bracket, freshman Brandt Eichenberger finished second. Eichenberger won the quarterfinals by fall against Rocky Mountain’s Skylar Sanford and beat Heritage High School’s Levi Moore-Ferguson by technical fall (16-1) in the semifinals.

Dogie Invite

On Friday, senior Hunter Massie picked up second place in the 165-pound bracket. Massie won the quarterfinals against Sheridan’s Ronan Cullen by technical fall (19-4) before defeating Landyn Mahaffy of Sturgis by a 10-8 decision in the semifinals.

Freshman Bo Leever obtained fourth place in the 106-pound bracket. Senior Moses Lopez came in sixth place at 215 pounds.
