THS dominates Burns Invite – Girls snag gold

Torrington High School dominated the annual Burns Invitational on Friday. The Lady Blazers left the competition in the dust, garnering gold with 120 team points. The Blazer boys finished fourth overall with 76 points.

The meet featured multiple PRs, new school records and tons of hardware.

Sophomore Brooklyn Asmus won the 100-meter dash by an incredible 0.31-second margin, clocking in at 12.01 seconds. Asmus went on to snag gold in the 200-meters at 24.54 seconds.

Sophomore Callie Taylor won the long-distance girls' 3200-meters, timing in at 13 minutes, 43.82 seconds.

In hurdles, sophomore Natalie Hawes secured gold in the 100-meters with a time of 16.78 seconds.

Asmus, Hawes, junior Jaycee Hurley and senior Alyssa Wondercheck won the 4x100-meter relay at 48.95. The THS girls – Asmus, Natalie Long, Hurley and Wondercheck – also won the 4x400-meter relay at 4:17.28. Taylor, junior Tiffany Krueger, Long and freshman Esperanze Chavez took first place in the 4x800-meter relay at 11:23.47.

Sophomore Trishell Pontarolo won the girls' triple jump, hitting a mark of 36 feet, 7 inches.

In the boys' competition, senior Zabdiel  Munoz won the 1600-meters with a time of 4:54.63.

Senior Jorey Asmus, sophomore Brady Dagen, Munoz and junior Tyler Nicolay captured first place in the 4x800-meters at 9:29.26.

Junior Evan Hellus garnered gold in the boys' triple jump with a leap of 41-07 1/2.

Senior Trey Parriott won the boys' shot put with a toss of 49-09.
