LANDER – A long bus trip for the Torrington High School boys and girls wrestling teams culminated in strong performances and hardware at the Lander Valley Invitational on Friday and Saturday, January 24-25.
The Blazer boys advanced to eighth place out of 27 programs from across Wyoming on the team leaderboard, posting 96.5 points.
Tallying 42.5 team points, the Lady Blazers finished 15th overall out of 23 teams.
Freshman Catherine Hendricks garnered the championship in the girls’ 125-pound bracket.
In the boys’ division, junior Colby Sandusky set the pace for the Blazers with a second-place finish at 150 pounds.
Girls tournament
Hendricks made quick work of Clara Romig of Mountain View in the 125-pound quarterfinals with a pin at 23 seconds.
Progressing to the semifinals, Hendricks defeated Pinedale’s Matazi Landers by technical fall (15-0).
The championship match pitted Hendricks against Malaya Goss of Douglas. Hendricks battled Goss into the third period before pinning her opponent at 3:04.
Sophomore Iree Hershey snagged bronze in the 155-pound bracket. Hershey won the first two rounds in her division by pin in the first periods.
Junior Aubree Fahrmeyer (140 pounds) and sophomore Cathryn Reimer (235) both scored three team points for the Lady Blazers.
Boys tournament
Sandusky won the quarterfinals at 150 pounds by pinning Kemmerer’s Noah Parks with 55 seconds remaining in the first period.
In the semfinals, Sandusky pinned Kash Lenzen of Douglas at 5 minutes.
Senior Barrett Eichenberger fought his way back through the consolation bracket at 138 pounds to defeat Evanston’s Kolby Hamilton by a 10-5 decision in the consolation semifinals.
Making his way to the third-place match, Eichenberger won against Carston Bartlett of Rawlins by a 14-11 decision.
Senior Tyler Nicolay clinched fourth place in the 120-pound bracket after pinning Kaden Scott of Thunder Ridge 26 seconds into the consolation semifinal.
Junior Ty Albaugh rounded out hardware for the Blazers with a fifth-place finish in the 150-pound classification.
Junior Brendan Woodard picked up 10 team points in the 157-pound bracket. Senior Kaden Romig tallied 8.5 team points (165 pounds) while freshman Brandt Eichenberger collected seven (175 pounds).
