CHEYENNE – The staff at the Torrington Telegram fared well last weekend at the 126th Wyoming Press Association (WPA) Convention in Cheyenne.
Robert Galbreath, sports editor, took second place for his August 9, 2024, “Finding perspective: Local barber snags hardware at Wyoming Senior Olympics,” under the sports feature story under division b of the Pacemaker Contest.
“I liked the way the writer drew parallels between the training and achievements of a local 64-year-old Senior Games swimmer with a 24-year-old US Olympian who competes in the same event,” WPA judges remarked.
Galbreath also earned an honorable mention under the sports feature photo category this year with his photograph of the Torrington Little League majors’ all-stars team picking up their second consecutive state title, punching their ticket to the mountain regionals in California on July 31, 2024. The photo, titled “Coach Curry and team celebration,” was remarked as a “fun photo celebrating state championship.”
With his photo of Rhett Clarke, Torrington Tigers catcher as he tagged his opponent from Cheyenne as he attempted to slide into home during the final inning of the game, Galbreath brought home another honorable mention under the sports action photo category.
“It’s easy to feel the action captured in this play at the plate, even through the body language of the umpire,” the judges remarked.
Under the spot news story category for division b, Jess Oaks, editor, took home second place Pacemaker award with the detailed story about a train derailment in Yoder which was published on November 1.
“Story was told with color, despite being on the spot. Good job,” WPA judges remarked.
Under the category of column writing, Oaks snagged an honorable mention for her opinion pieces titled, “Let’s talk chickens,” “Best interest of the child” and “Don’t have nice things.”
“Good to see an editor share their opinion on community topics,” the judges remarked. “This is the avenue to do that and keeps a writer’s opinion out of the news story.”
Under the website category, the Telegram staff placed first under division b.
“This was a well-done website. It was clear and easy to maneuverer in. It was also engaging. I loved that you kept ‘Special Sections’ available for readers,” WPA judges remarked. “The way you did both opinions and public notices was great.”
The WPA was organized in 1877 and has been dedicated to the preservation, progression and professional development of its members to work to protect the rights of a free press and advocate for the common interests of Wyoming newspapers. During the convention, items published between November 1, 2023 and October 31, 2024, by a WPA member newspaper were judges based on three divisions of circulation.
