Philippians 2:13

I love my house. It isn’t shiny and new, in fact it is anything but! Part of my home was built in the 1920’s and the “newest” part came to be in the 60’s! My home abounds with character. It has the old doors with the glass door knobs, lots of paneling and cool trim, and I do believe the floors have had the same squeak for a gazillion years!

In our home you will find two basements. They are referred to as the “new” basement and the “old.” The unique thing about these two basements is they are in no way shape or form connected. You access one as you come in our back door, and the other takes off from our living room, never ever to meet!

To get to the upper level of our home you go up the stereotypical old country house stairs. They are wooden and go straight up, and I do mean straight up. Having come down them very quickly while hanging onto a vacuum cleaner, I can attest to just how hard they are when you come down them fast and do not land on your feet. At the top of the stairs you are greeted by an amazing room with the short side walls and slanted ceiling. This room houses four twin beds, just enough when our granddaughter all come to stay.

Our house is a monster and we are finding that we live in very little of it. In days gone by, the “new” basement was full of activity as that is where the pool table and family room are. The “old” basement housed our vet room, a guest room and much storage. This basement is where we used to bring chilled baby calves to warm them up.

These days Greg and I live mainly on the main level which has absolutely everything we need. Weeks will go by that we don’t go to the “new basement, and often time we kind of forget it is there. We do go down on occasion to take a gander just to make sure all is well. The only time I go upstairs is to make sure things are in order for the firs, or if we are having some young ones come to play, as that is where the toys are found.

One time Greg went down to check on the “new” basement and we found that the rain water had somehow found its way in. It wasn’t a catastrophe, but enough that we knew we had a problem. This last summer after much rain, our “old’ basement was taking on water like a sinking ship. It reminded us that we needed to be diligent about checking on those unused spaces.

There are certain parts of my life that I like to ignore. I like to live in the “comfortable” part of my life. The part that there aren’t any cracks or issues. Franky, there aren’t many if any part that don’t need some work.

I believe it is a merciful God that helps us see the cracks, the weak spots, the crumbling pieces of our life. He wants us to live the very best life, and for that to happen we need to keep an eye on all the parts and pieces, and take care of business when needed. Just like we had to take action to fix our basement, there are things we do to fix up the areas of our life that need a touch up.

Don’t know what needs work or how to fix them? Ask God, He will show you. He only wants what is best for us.

Philippians 2:13 For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.
