Find a diamond, share a diamond, be a diamond

Some of you would disagree when I say there are good things about social media. I agree that it has its positive and negative aspects, but one thing that I love about Facebook is the memory section. Each morning I go to my profile and hit the memory button and it brings up posts from a year ago, 5 years ago, and longer! It brings up pictures and things that maybe I hadn’t thought about since they were first posted. Events that I had forgotten! It helps me remember those forgotten times. I look at the memories and wonder how in the world I could ever forget!

I have been reading the Old Testament and have been so incredibly frustrated with the Israelites, God’s chosen people. God has performed miracle after miracle right in front of them and it seems they quickly forget. Take for instance, they had just crossed the red sea. Do you remember that incredible story? They had just lived through all the plagues in Egypt and Pharaoh finally says, to leave! They traveled and came to the Red Sea with the Egyptians in hot pursuit. God told Moses to raise his staff and stretch out his hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites go through the sea on dry ground. Moses did just that, the Israelites safely crossed. When Pharaoh’s men followed them Moses once again stretched out his hand and the waters flowed back over the Egyptians and chariots and drowned them all! If your heart isn’t beating just a little bit faster as you have read this, I am a bit worried about you! They lived a miracle!

Soon, very soon after this amazing day in their lives, the Israelites began to grumble that they were thirsty and moaned and groaned that they were going to die. They had just lived and witnessed this great event that the Lord had done on their behalf, and already they had forgotten that He would take care of them. It wasn’t the last time and they did it time and time again, and in my mind I was saying, “How can you forget?”

It didn’t take long for me to realize that I too have witnessed God’s hand in mighty ways, and yet by the way I act you would never know it. We have lived through calving blizzards, droughts, fires big and small, financial hiccups, family drama, and many more adventures, and we saw the hand of God in every one of them. Yet, when a blizzard is looming my old gut begins to churn, when the thunderclouds start rolling in, I start pacing, and when the rain doesn’t come I am frankly scared. How could I forget?

What can we do to help us remember? A great start is to share with our family and friends what God has done in our life. Talk about the big events and the small events. Write it in a journal, or maybe start a blessing calendar, a calendar that lists how you saw God’s hand on that very day. Take a pictures and share it with the story behind it. These days we take 100’s of pictures, but few of them matter. Talk about the ones that matter. Come up with creative ideas to pass along the goodness of God. I don’t want us to be known as a people who forget.

Psalm 66:16-Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he has done for my soul.
