TORRINGTON – Brittany Dalton, formerly known as Brittany Rost, entered a change of plea regarding a charge of endangering a child. Charges stem back from an incident at the Best Value Inn, in Torrington.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed in the Eighth Judicial Circuit Court for Goshen County, peace officer Andrea Sippel of the Torrington Police Department responded to the hotel on August 12, 2024, at approximately 1:59 p.m. for a report of a child being left alone in a hotel room and the mother was nowhere to be found on the premise.
“Upon Your Affiant’s (Sippel) arrival, the hotel receptionist and reporting party provided a copy of a driver’s license for the person renting the hotel room, identified as Brittney Dalton,” the affidavit explained.
The hotel staff advised Sipple, Dalton was not in the room and the door had been left slightly ajar. Upon arrival, Sipple indicated in the affidavit, a small child was observed sleeping in a pack-and-play, in the room, as well as another child in the room.
“While Your Affiant was in the room with the child, she observed a small glass teardrop-shaped pipe with black residue laying in plain view on the bed next to a lighter,” the affidavit said.
Sipple then contacted the hotel manager who reportedly found the sleeping child inside the hotel room, after noticing the door was not secured, according to court documents. Sipple also indicated in the affidavit, the hotel manager had advised the officer, Dalton had been seen leaving the hotel property on August 12 at approximately 1:50 p.m., without her children.
“At 1429 (2:29 p.m.) hours, Ms. Dalton returned to the room with a bag of groceries,” the affidavit said.
Prior to a search of the hotel room, Sipple indicated in the affidavit, Dalton admitted to having possession of other drug paraphernalia located in the hotel room where the minor children were discovered.
“… Ms. Dalton advised there would be marijuana and ‘probably’ something else. Ms. Dalton advised she did not know what else would be in the room as she did have a roommate,” the probable cause affidavit said. “Further, Your Affiant confirmed with the hotel that the room is booked to Ms. Brittney Dalton only.”
Dalton was booked into the Goshen County Detention Center on August 12, 2024, at 3 p.m.
Records indicate Dalton was charged with one count of child endangerment, children where meth was stored, ingested, or possessed. Dalton is also facing additional charges in Nebraska. The case was bound over to district court in an August 19, 2024, hearing. Dalton was ordered to appear in district court in October for arraignment and the defendant entered a plea of ‘not guilty.” A jury trial was scheduled for Monday, February 10, 2025, at 9 a.m.
On Monday, December 30, Dalton, through her public defender, Eric Palen, filed a motion to vacate the scheduled jury trial and set a change of hearing plea on Thursday, January 9 at approximately 9 a.m. Dalton changed her initial “not guilty” plea to “guilty”. Sentencing for the 30-year-old mother will take place after a pretrial sentencing investigation and it is scheduled for Wednesday, April 9 at 9 a.m.
