Local drowning at Packers Lake

GoFundMe established for family

GOSHEN COUNTY – On Sunday, May 26, members of the Torrington Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD) Dive Rescue Team were called out to Packer Lake, southeast of Torrington near the Wyoming/ Nebraska border, for the report of someone who had fallen into the water.

The body of Joey Eaton was recovered after a search involving many different departments and volunteers.

A GoFundMe account has been established to help offset the expenses.

“As friends of Joey Eaton and his family, we are reaching out on their behalf to our community for help. Yesterday (Sunday), what began as any other day, celebrating the beginning of camping season with his family, Joey's life was unexpectedly cut short in a tragic water accident. In addition to prayers, thoughts, love, and support, his family needs financial help with his final expenses,” the GoFundMe page reads.

“If you knew Joey, you know that he was genuine and pure of heart. He knew no stranger, as he would strike up a conversation with anyone young, old, or in-between. He was hardworking and always willing to help others, you could count on Joey,” the page continues.

The TVFD reminds the community water safety is important.

“Please take a few extra minutes this summer to put on a life jacket if you plan to be on or around any bodies of water. Thank you,” TVFD Facebook post reads.
