TORRINGTON – The Goshen County Library has launched Studio 17, a new Makerspace designed to encourage creativity, innovation, and hands-on learning. Located in the Library Activity Center across the parking lot from the main library entrance, Studio 17 offers access to a variety of tools and equipment that allow residents to explore new skills, test ideas, and develop projects.
The Makerspace is equipped with a 3D printer for designing and producing three-dimensional objects, two Cricut Maker 3 machines for precision cutting of paper, vinyl, and fabric, and a Glowforge Aura Laser Cutter for engraving and cutting wood, acrylic, leather, and other materials. A sublimation ink printer and heat press make it possible to design and transfer custom graphics onto shirts, mugs, and other surfaces, while a sewing machine provides opportunities for fabric projects. For more traditional crafting needs, an iron and ironing board are available, as well as a button maker for creating personalized pins. Library staff say these tools will support a wide range of interests and increase accessibility of specialized equipment for everyone in Goshen County.
Use of the Makerspace is available by appointment only in October. Librarian Katrina Haines hopes that introducing Studio 17 to the community by appointment will allow library staff to demonstrate the creative potential of the equipment. Later this month, the library will be announcing a more permanent schedule.
In addition, the library is introducing a new program called Teen Thursdays. Every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Studio 17 will be reserved exclusively for teenagers. The program is designed to give young people a space of their own to explore the Makerspace equipment, work on creative projects, and connect with peers. Some evenings will also feature special activities and guided projects.
The project was funded through a grant from the Carol McMurry Library Endowment via the Wyoming Community Foundation and through donations. Use of the Makerspace is free, with the exception of consumable materials such as 3D printer filament.
The Makerspace adds to the library’s longstanding mission of supporting education, creativity, and community engagement. With Studio 17 now open, the Goshen County Library is inviting the community to imagine, invent, and create in new and exciting ways.
