Lancers second, Lady Lancers seventh in Vegas

LAS VEGAS – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) men’s and women’s golf teams kicked off the spring portion of the 2024-2025 season with solid performances at the Vegas Warrior invitational from March 14-15.

“It was great to get out and play our first tournament of the spring,” coach Zach Smith said. “Vegas didn’t provide the great weather that you would normally associate with Las Vegas but we were excited to play some competitive golf either way.”

The EWC men advanced to second place on the team leaderboard with a two-day cumulative total of 589 strokes (29 over par). Ten teams competed in the men’s field at the invitational hosted by Winona State with the host school taking first place (569 strokes). The Lancers shot 296 strokes on the first day, improving to 293 in the second round.

“The guys played well both days, helping us earn a second-place finish – our highest finish at an NCAA Division II invite in program history,” Smith remarked. “It was a full team effort from the guys with sophomores Braylon Bingham and Josh Chapman leading the way for the team. It was a great start to the spring season for the guys.”

The EWC women finished seventh as a team with a two-day total of 729 strokes. The Lady Lancers progressed from 368 strokes in the first round to 361 on the second day.

“The women fought hard on the first day considering the tournament conditions and were able to play better the second day,” Smith added. “(Freshman) Jessica Applegarth had a great first day but let a few get away on day two. I’m proud of the way the girls kept battling and I can’t wait to get things going with them this spring.”

Bingham progressed to sixth place on the men’s leaderboard shooting par on the first day (70 strokes) with 74 strokes on the second day for a total of 144 strokes (+4).

Chapman took 10th place in the men’s division with a two-day tally of 146 strokes (+6). On the first day, Chapman recorded 77 strokes, improving to 69 in the second.

In the women’s division, Applegarth led the Lady Lancers with a 22nd-place finish at 167 strokes. Applegarth shot 80 strokes in the first round and 87 in the second.
