Lancers drop games to North Platte, McCook College

NORTH PLATTE  The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lancers basketball team traveled to Nebraska to play North Platte Community College (NPCC) and McCook Community College over the weekend.

On Friday, despite a battle by the Lancers to close the gap against NPCC in the second half, EWC fell short to the Knights, 75-63. The Lancers dropped Saturday’s game to McCook, 82-65.

“The Lancers had a tough weekend,” coach Bill Engel said. “We continue to show moments of great potential and even brilliance, but we need to find 40 minutes of consistency – 40 minutes of effort, execution and communication. Right now, we are fighting to find our identify. These things take time and we are going to get there.”

NPCC

The first half of the game between EWC and NPCC ended with the Knights ahead, 41-26. The Lancers fought back in the second half to outscore NPCC, 37-34 but came up short in bridging the deficit.

Freshman Jaironn Speights led EWC in scoring against NPCC with 15 points. Freshman Jouk Mayan and sophomore Khayree Rashed both contributed nine points. Freshman Russell Moorer tallied eight points, freshman Jumarion Weh seven, sophomore Bilal Cisse six, freshman Eli Igiranez four, freshman Javier Gonzalez three and fellow freshman LaThario Miller two.

On the boards, Weh set the pace for the Lancers with nine rebounds. Weh also shared the ball for six assists.

Defensively, Mayan, freshman Alain Nziza, Speights and Gonzalez each totaled one block. Nziza and Speights both grabbed two steals.

McCook College

A point-for-point first half between EWC and McCook Community College ended with McCook up by several possessions, 36-28, at halftime.

McCook went on to outpace EWC in the second half, 46-37.

Two Lancers scored double digits against McCook – Igiranez and Moorer both netted 11 points. Nziza tossed in eight points, Speights and Cisse each six, freshman Nathan Mirich five with four apiece by Rashed and freshman Vukasin Spasojevic. Miller and sophomore Rodrigo Sanchez each rounded out the tally with three points while Weh and Mayan both scored two.

Cisse tallied five rebounds with four apiece by Rashed and Moorer. Weh delivered three assists and Gonzalez totaled two steals.
