Lancers drop game to LCCC

TORRINGTON – A neck-and-neck conference matchup between the Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lancers and Laramie County Community College (LCCC) came down to the wire in Torrington on Saturday, February 15.

A back-and-forth battle for control of the scoreboard in the first half resulted in the Lancers pulling ahead by one point, 34-33, when the halftime buzzer sounded.

LCCC gained the upper hand in the second half, outmaneuvering EWC, 42-34, to secure the conference win by several possessions, 75-68.

"We played tough in the second half but could not get a couple of timely shots to fall and although we defended well there were a couple of defensive possessions we needed to finish," Coach Bill Engel said. "We are excited to see our guys continue to improve as we strive to become a championship game."

While EWC led in scoring from the charity stripe (77.8 percent by the Lancers to 65.5 percent by LCCC), LCCC topped EWC from the field (42.1 percent to 40.3 percent) and outside the perimeter (31.8 percent to 26.7 percent).

When the dust settled on Saturday, the Lancers shared a points spread among nine players. Two Lancers posted double-digit scoring, led by freshman LaThario Miller with 15 points and fellow freshman Jaironn Speights at 12.

Freshmen Russell Moorer and Jumarion Weh each collected nine points while sophomore Khayree Rashed posted eight. Four freshman rounded out the scorebook with Alain Nziza netting six points, Eli Igiranez four, Javier Gonzalez three and Jouk Mayan two.

Miller led on the boards with eight rebounds while Rashed pulled down five.

Rashed, Speights, Miller and Weh passed the ball for two assists apiece. On defense, Moorer and Gonzalez both wrangled three steals while Nziza reached up for a block.
