Lady Lancers pick up first two wins of the season in Neb.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – The Eastern Wyoming College women’s basketball team picked up, not only the first win of the season, but the second win as well with victories over North Platte Community College and McCook Community College over the weekend.

On Friday, the Lady Lancers shot 44.4% (28-of-63) from the floor, while holding the North Platte Lady Knights to only 29.3% (22-of-75) shooting as EWC picked up a 73-64 win – the team’s first of the season.

Eastern Wyoming used an 11-0 run in the first quarter to take a 16-11 lead after the first quarter, pushing the lead to 38-25 by halftime.

In the third quarter, North Platte chipped away at the deficit to six at 54-48. The Knights got no closer than four over the final eight minutes of the game.

Sophomore Amanda Sene da Cruz led the team with 22 points and eight, while freshman Tamar Kopilevich added 14 points and four rebounds. Freshman Andrea Gutierrez Ciordia had 12 points.

Torrington High School graduate Reece Halley had nine points and seven points for North Platte.

On Saturday, McCook led EWC 56-55 with 21.1 seconds left, but freshman Ines Gnahore hit a game-winning layup as the time wound down.

In the early part of the game, the Lady Lancers led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Indians took a 31-24 lead at halftime.

After three quarters, Eastern Wyoming still trailed by seven at 48-41 before rallying in the fourth quarter to score the second win of the season.

No stats were available at press time.

With the two wins, the EWC women split the season series with the two Nebraska schools.

The Lady Lancers, now 2-10 for the season, wrap up their pre-Christmas schedule on Thursday at home against Northeastern Junior College. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
