Lady Lancers go undefeated on weekend

Posted

RIVERTON  The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lady Lancers snagged back-to-back wins at games hosted by Central Wyoming College over the holiday weekend on Friday and Saturday, November 29-30.

A 57.6-percent field goal percentage by the Lady Lancers against the Wyoming all-stars team on Friday resulted in EWC scoring a resounding 95-57 victory.

The Lady Lancers returned to the court reenergized on Saturday to trounce Lamar Community College, 88-71.

“This was a great weekend for our team,” coach Tim Larsen said. “We did a great job of sharing the ball which led to open shots and we did a great job of knocking them down. I thought defensively we were really good at forcing contested shots which led to us controlling the pace of the games.”

All-stars

Hitting the ground running in the first quarter, EWC outscored the Wyoming all-stars, 21-11.

The second quarter proved closer with the Lady Lancers tallying 18 points to 14 by the all-stars, but EWC continued to lead, 39-25, at halftime.

An explosive third quarter saw the Lady Lancers offense net 27 points while a gritty EWC defense held the all-stars to six.

As the fourth quarter began, the Lady Lancers controlled the scoreboard by more than double the points scored by the all-stars, 66-31.

A point-for-point battle ensued in the final 10 minutes of regulation as the all-stars attempted to close the gap, but the effort was too little, too late.

Eight Lady Lancers scored double digits against the all-stars. Sophomore Leamsi Acuna led with 13 points. Freshman Rhia Saggar and sophomore Josephine Vourliotis both tallied 12 points with 11 by freshman Kacey Parks. Sophomores Nikolina Vukcevic and Aliya Tripp and freshmen Yaiza Paredes and Lucy Devoy each contributed 10 .

On the boards, freshman Ariadna Martinez pulled down eight rebounds with Devoy totaling seven. Saggar shared the ball with seven assists.

Defensively, Paredes and Vourliotis each recorded two blocks while Tripp grabbed six steals.

Both opponents netted 16 points in a neck-and-neck third quarter.

Pulling out all the stops in the fourth quarter, the Lady Lancers tossed in 24 points and held Lamar to 14.
