Lady Lancers fall to LCCC

CHEYENNE – In an intense game that came down to the wire between the Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lady Lancers and Laramie County Community College (LCCC) found LCCC up by a single possession, 64-62, when the final buzzer sounded.

EWC faced off against LCCC at an away game on Thursday, January 16.

The Lady Lancers won the first quarter by one point, 17-16. Five EWC players contributed to the point spread in the opening 10 minutes of regulation, led by sophomores Yaiza Paredes and Leamsi Acuna with four points apiece. Sophomores Aliya Tripp, Nikolina Vukcevic and Josephine Vourliotis each drained three points.

The lead changed hands throughout the second quarter. EWC remained ahead with a 3-pointer by sophomore Boden Liljedahl early in the second. Vukcevic netted a pair of inside shots and Tripp converted an and-1, placing the Lady Lancers up, 28-26.

LCCC tied the game at 28 points. Paredes tossed in a jumper and Liljedahl scored on a fastbreak and the lead returned to EWC, 32-30. Acuna widened the Lady Lancer’s advantage to three points, 33-30, with a free throw.

LCCC responded with an outside shot to edge up, 35-34. A free throw by Tripp with two seconds remaining in the first half resulted in a 35-35 deadlock as the teams headed for the locker rooms.

The back-and-forth continued in a physical third quarter. A four-point run by Paredes swung the scoreboard in EWC’s favor, 39-35.

LCCC answered with a 10-2 run to pull up, 48-41, as the final quarter commenced.

EWC battled back to narrow LCCC’s lead to a single point, 56-55, late in the fourth quarter, including buckets by Acuna, Vourliotis, Vukcevic and Paredes.

LCCC remained ahead by a single possession after Tripp went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line with 1:16 left in regulation.

Paredes led the Lady Lancers offense against LCCC with 15 points. Tripp and Vukcevic also scored double digits with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Acuna contributed eight points, Liljedahl and Vourliotis each seven with two by freshman Kacey Parks.

Acuna delivered three assists while Acuna, Liljedahl and Vukcevic snagged two steals apiece.

Vukcevic posted a double-double against LCCC with 14 rebounds.
