CASPER – The Lingle-Fort Laramie (LFL) Lady Doggers battled back from a quarterfinal setback at the 1A state tournament to trounce Farson-Eden, 51-34, in the consolation semifinals on Friday, March 7.
State opened for the Lady Doggers with LFL coming up short against Burlington, 61-46, on Thursday.
Following their victory against Farson-Eden on Friday, the Lady Doggers advanced to the consolation finals against Upton. LFL kept Upton’s lead to one or two possessions for most of regulation, but ultimately came up short in matching the Bobcats in points on the final scoreboard, 43-33.
“The LFL girls faced some tough competition at the state tournament,” coach Susan Bartel said. “The Burlington game was a hard loss after playing neck-and-neck for most of the game with several of our players in foul trouble. The team came together to beat Farson-Eden with a decisive win. The game against Upton, much like Burlington, was neck-and-neck until the end and the girls played their hearts out.”
The Lady Doggers finished with an impressive season. LFL clinched the SEWAC regular season title with a 19-3 overall record. The Lady Doggers went undefeated against 1A Southeast rivals in a 10-game winning streak.
At the regional tournament in Upton, LFL rallied in the consolation bracket to defeat Hanna-Elk Mountain, 68-35, before dispatching Niobrara County, 57-37, to bag the No. 3 seed.
“The girls should be proud of their 23-6 season – one of the best records for the Lady Doggers in school history,” Bartel added.
Burlington
The first quarter between LFL and Burlington ended with the Lady Huskies ahead by several possessions, 13-9.
Both teams netted 14 points in the second quarter as the Lady Doggers fought to close the gap.
The halftime score favored Burlington by two possessions, 27-23.
LFL continued to battle in the third quarter, reducing Burlington’s lead to four points by outscoring the Lady Huskies, 13-12.
A 22-10 run by Burlington in the fourth quarter sealed the deal for the Lady Huskies.
Junior Skyla Wunder paced the LFL offense against Burlington with 16 points. Fellow junior Jordynn Speckner also collected double digits with 13 points.
Senior Brenly Shipp netted seven points, freshman Shaylyn Wunder four, sophomore Charlotte Speckner three and sophomore Afton Schilreff a free throw.
Jordynn Speckner led on the boards with eight rebounds. Skyla Wunder rounded out the stat sheet with three assists and seven steals.
Farson-Eden
Digging deep, the Lady Doggers returned to the court on Friday morning to win a physical first quarter against Farson, 9-7.
LFL expanded its lead to three points at halftime, 18-15, after topping Farson in scoring, 9-8, in the second.
The Lady Doggers blasted onto the court in the third quarter, nearly quadrupling Farson in scoring, 21-6, anchored by 3-pointers from Skyla Wunder and Shaylyn Wunder.
Farson outscored LFL in the fourth quarter, 13-12, but the effort to close the gap came up far short.
Eight Lady Doggers contributed to the final points spread against Farson, led by Jordynn Speckner with 12 and Skyla Wunder 11. Charlotte Speckner collected nine points, Shaylyn Wunder seven, Schilreff and junior Avary Rising four apiece and senior Addison Scott and Shipp each two.
The Lady Doggers outrebounded Farson, 55-41. Charlotte Speckner dominated the boards with double-digit rebounds at 11 while Jordynn Speckner pulled down nine.
Skyla Wunder totaled three assists and four steals.
Upton
LFL responded to an early 8-0 run by Upton with 11 points to reduce the Lady Bobcats’ advantage to only three points, 14-11, at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Doggers whittled down Upton’s lead to two points at halftime, 22-20, in a second quarter that saw LFL net nine points while holding Upton to eight.
Upton pulled up in the second quarter by topping LFL in scoring, 14-8. The Lady Doggers tossed in five points in the final eight minutes of regulation while holding Upton to seven.
Skyla Wunder set the momentum for the Lady Doggers offense against Upton with 15 points. Jordynn Speckner contributed seven points with three each by Shipp and Shaylyn Wunder, two from Rising and a free throw by Schilreff.
Charlotte Speckner again pulled down double-digit rebounds at 10. Charlotte Speckner also passed the ball for three assists while Skyla Wunder snatched four steals.
