Lady Cyclones track fourth at Bayard, boys 13th

BAYARDBoth the Southeast High School girls and boys track teams squared off against tough competition from across western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming at the 2025 Bayard CD track invitational on Saturday, April 5.

The Lady Cyclones battled their way to the No. 4 spot on the team leaderboard in a field of 16 teams with 70 points. The Southeast boys placed 13th as a team with 11 points.

Sophomore Haylee Eckwall captured gold in the girls’ shot put in Bayard. Ekwall advanced to the No. 1 spot on the event leaderboard with a toss measuring 36 feet, 2 ¾ inches to finish ahead of the runner-up, Fallon DeBlois of Bridgeport, by nearly two feet.

“We had a good Saturday in Bayard despite the cool weather,” coach Jeff Fullmer said. “We prequalified some more girls for the state meet. I was happy with our effort and mental toughness. We are a work in progress and the next step waiting for us is at Cheyenne East this Friday. We like this meet so we can compete against all levels of schools.”

Girls top eight medalists

Sophomore Bailey Mehling medaled in two sprinting events. Timing the 200-meters in at 27.48 seconds, Mehling clinched silver in the event. 

Mehling went on to snag fourth place in the 100-meters with a time of 13.54 seconds.

Senior Taylar Hansen bagged silver in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking in with a time of 17.81 seconds. Hansen also placed sixth in the pole vault, clearing 7-00.

In the discus, junior Hadley Leithead battled her way to the No. 2 spot on the event leaderboard with a toss measuring 101-02.

Two Southeast athletes made the top eight in the 400-meters, led by junior Kaycee Kosmicki in third place at 1 minute, 2.52 seconds. Mehling took fourth place, timing in at 1:03.23.

Representing Southeast in the long-distance 3200-meters, senior Anna Hartman finished sixth, clocking in at 15:12.64.

Rounding out individual top-eight finishes, freshman Meaghan Hooper came in sixth place in the high jump with a mark of 4-04.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Hartman, senior Angie Logsdon, junior Keana Llewellyn and Kosmicki pulled into second place, posting a time of 11:23.36.

Hansen, freshman Avery Tighe, junior Molly Hasbargen and freshman Kaylee Moats clinched sixth place in the 4x100-meter relay at 57.19 seconds.

Boys top eight

Senior Kannon Tippetts paced the Southeast boys team with a second-place finish in the 400-meters. Tippetts reached the finish line with a time of 52.81 seconds.

Fellow senior William Knowlton crossed the finish line for the long-distance 3200-meters in seventh place, posting a time of 13:45.53.

Sophomore Connor Coxbill picked up eighth place in the 800-meters, timing in at 2:27.38.

• 200-meters: Logsdon in 13th place at 30.59 seconds and Tighe 17th at 30.94.

• 800-meters: Llewellyn in 12th place at 3:00.42.

• 100-hurdles: Kaylee Gibson in 23rd place at 25.92 seconds.

• 300-hurdles: Gibson in 13th place at 1:16.05.

• Shot put: Brooklyn Leithead in 18th place at 25-07 and Briley Leithead 33rd at 19-03 ¼.

• Discus: Brooklyn Leithead in ninth place at 88-06 and Ekwall 11th at 86-07.

• Long jump: Moats in 18th place at 12-04.

• 100-meters: Liam Haas in 16th place at 12.56 seconds, Trevor Jolovich 17th at 12.60 and Ben Gibbons 28th at 13.92.

• 200-meters: Haas in 12th place at 26.17 seconds, Jolovich 24th at 27.23 and Gibbons 31st at 29.14.

• 400-meters: Jolovich in ninth place at 59.09 seconds.

• 110-hurdles: Rico Ramirez in 19th place at 21.73 seconds.

• Shot put: Gauge Howe in 18th place at 31-00 ½, Alec DeMarce 19th at 30-08 and Talon Tippetts 22nd at 30-00 ½.

• Discus: Howe in 26th place at 85-05, DeMarce 27th at 82-05 and Sebastian Brumley 31st at 73-05.

• Long jump: Haas in 17th place at 15-10 ¾ and Gibbons 21st at 15-04 ½.

• Triple jump: Ramirez in 19th place at 31-04 ¼ and Coxbill 22nd at 30-07 ¼.
