YODER – A point-for-point battle ensued between the Southeast High School Lady Cyclones and the Lingle-Fort Laramie (LFL) Lady Doggers at the first county-rivalry game in Yoder on Thursday, January 16.
Southeast closed an 11-4 first-quarter lead by LFL to a single possession, 16-13, at halftime.
Control for the scoreboard swung back and forth in a physical second half. LFL ultimately pulled ahead with a six-point run to win, 34-29.
On Friday, Southeast fell to Pine Bluffs, 59-14. Junior Keana Llewellyn kept the Lady Cyclones on the scoreboard against the Lady Hornets with three outside shots while senior Brooklyn Leithead netted two close-range shots.
“I thought I saw good things against Lingle on Thursday, especially in the second half” coach Jennifer Scheer said. “The kids showed toughness although we just weren’t quick enough to make some adjustments to critical errors down the line, especially with free throws."
Cross-county rivalry
The first quarter between Southeast and LFL ended with the LFL ahead, 11-4.
Leithead opened the second quarter with a close-range shot. Senior Anna Hartman and sophomore Brylie Booth both snatched a steal and Leithead tossed in a jumper, closing LFL’s lead to one possession, 11-8.
Llewellyn drained an outside shot and Leithead again found an opening in the perimeter to score, narrowing the Lady Dogger’s advantage to a one point, 14-13.
LFL responded with a close-range shot to lead by three points, 16-13, at halftime.
The Lady Cyclones outmaneuvered LFL in a physical third quarter, 7-4.
Junior Taylor Tregemba netted an inside shot and Hartman tossed in an outside shot to place Southeast ahead, 18-16, in the first minute of the third quarter.
LFL tied the game at 18 points. Taking possession, Booth sank a bucket to place the Lady Cyclones ahead, 20-18.
Defensively, Southeast maintained the pressure at the end of the third quarter with steals by Booth and sophomore Lyla Wernsman.
LFL matched Southeast in scoring, 20-20, as the fourth quarter began.
Defensive pressure by Llewellyn resulted in a turnover and Tregemba drained a close-range shot, resulting in a 22-22 deadlock.
The game reached a stalemate again at 24 points with a jumper from Booth. LFL answered with a four-point run to retake the lead, 28-24.
Booth converted an and-1 and the Lady Doggers only led by one point, 28-27, with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Tregemba tossed in an inside shot before LFL went on a six-point run.
Tregemba and Booth led Southeast in scoring against LFL with eight points apiece. Leithead contributed six points with three apiece by Llewellyn and Hartman and a free throw by sophomore Haylee Ekwall.
Llewellyn led on the boards with six while Booth totaled three.
