TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School girls’ basketball team remains undefeated in the 3A East conference following a 58-35 thrashing by the Lady Blazers against the Rawlins Lady Outlaws at home on Friday, January 31.

Torrington’s triumph against the Outlaws propelled the Lady Blazers to the No. 2 seed in the 3A East Conference.

On Friday, Torrington battled back from a one-possession deficit in the first quarter to lead by two possessions at halftime, 23-18, following a decisive eight-point run late in the second quarter.

The Lady Blazers dominated the scoreboard in the second half, nearly doubling Rawlins in scoring, 35-17, to seal Torrington’s victory.

“Rawlins came out ready to play and challenged us in the first half,” coach Chris Strampe said. “We need to continue to work on starting strong and this game gave us some good things to work on in that regard. Thankfully, our defensive intensity picked up before half and in the third quarter which allowed us to build a lead.”

Battling back

A neck-and-neck first quarter between the Lady Blazers and Lady Outlaws ended with Rawlins ahead, 13-11.

Senior Olive Osmera and junior Kennedy Reinhardt each drained outside shots during the first eight minutes of regulation. Osmera also netted a jumper and senior Jaycee Hurley converted an and-1.

Rawlins found itself ahead, 18-12, late in the second quarter. Digging deep, the Lady Blazer defense stepped up its pressure to prevent the Outlaws from scoring any more points in the first half with steals by Reinhardt, Hurley and Long.

Offensively, the Lady Blazers commenced an eight-point run with Long and senior Madix McIntosh both scoring twice on fastbreaks.

The Lady Blazers succeeded in turning the tables to capture the lead at halftime, 23-18.

Torrington roared onto the court in the third quarter, more than tripling Rawlins in scoring, 20-6. Senior Teryn Stokes paced the Lady Blazer offense in the third with 10 points. Osmera tossed in a trey while Hurley and McIntosh both scored on a fastbreak. Sophomore Kaia Jacobson entered the game and collected an inside shot.

On defense, Osmera, Reinhardt and Hurley maintained the pressure with steals.

Osmera opened the fourth quarter with a jumper and Reinhardt lined up a deep outside shot while Long went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line.

Torrington’s reserve players stepped onto the court to finish the job off in the final minutes of regulation. Freshman Ellis Mortimore went on a four-point run while junior Kieana Gunhammer scored from inside and freshman Grace Hibben netted a free throw.

Stokes led the Lady Blazers in scoring against Rawlins with 14 points. Osmera also tallied double digits with 10 points. Reinhardt, Hurley, Long and McIntosh each recorded six points.

Mortimore contributed four, Gunhammer and Jacobson two and Hibben one.
